length of putting stroke

Does he?

His elbows are certainly not sticking out sideways, which tends to happen if you putt with a putter that is too long for you!

People using the claw grip don't tend to have anywhere near straight arms.

Other than turning your bottom hand over, so the thumb is underneath the grip instead of on top, it doesn't make any difference. I should know because I putt that way (using a shortened putter)!

I know you do.

Do you have your arms ram rod straight ?

Putting for me is a fine motor skill. Sure I want the shoulders to move, my body to stay still but I also want some play in my elbows and hands. Ever so slightly to put a finesse feel to the stroke.

I've tried to putt with all lengths of putter and tried to keep my arms really straight. I Lose all sense of feel when I do this. A robotic feeling that has little control over the stroke. My whole arm works as a unit as nature intended.

A few years ago I got taught to go "toe to toe" with my putting stroke and have only every changed the width of my stance; and since going left hand low on short putts I've cut my putting down to no more than 2 per hole (Not always I might add the odd 3 or 4 putt will sneak in)

Putting for me is a subconscious activity, I have no idea how long or short my putting stroke is and I have no idea how it changes with different length putts. I putt best when I switch off and just let it happen. I would imagine that if I started thinkinf about it, I'd be terrible.

Note also that his putter is quite short relative to his height, because he is gripping it down by his knees. I understand that Phil Mickelson is 6'3" tall and uses a 34" long putter. :)

His arms aren't straight Del, there is a clear angle and not straight as you claimed.

As for putter length versus height. Let's have a look at, quite frankly, the best putter in the current game.

Just so you're aware, he's 6ft 1" (So 2" shorter than Philly Mick) but uses a 35" putter.

I really don't get your argument Del on this point.

This thread is about stroke length. Not another of del's 'short putters are best for everyone' threads.

Has anyone given this a go this weekend? good , bad , indifferent I am interested to hear how it goes.

It's something I've done for a while.

It does stop a deceleration but can cause a snatchy transition if you're not used to it or don't practice it.

He putts left hand below right, and you do need a slightly longer putter for this style. The point I am trying to make is that having a correctly fitted putter will help and complement your putting style. A 5'2" female with a 35" or 36" long putter is always going to struggle!

I practised for 2 hours this afternoon with a drill I use for Aimpoint. Once I set it up the 10ft and under pegs, I know that I don't really need to second guess my aimpoint and its a question of concentrating on speed and controlling on my short backswing, making sure I follow through twice as much with my heavy putter which doesn't need a lot of effort for the ball to roll towards the hole. Also I practised the push drill for 10mins as well and Getting a nice roll on the ball.

I took a photo of my drill set up but it's a right royal pain in the butt end to load photos on this site.
