Hi TFC,

I never really understood (never read it) the legend at the base of each section regarding hot posts/unread posts etc etc so I took time and understand it now- very useful, isuue is I found it wasn't accurate all the time ie
There are threads in grey (no unread posts) that I've never opened and threads in pink with the envelope closed with posts I have never read, so possibly its not reporting accurately at this juncture. I'll keep monitoring it and report back with findings.

All I ever use is 'jump to first unread post' and it's never worked right for me since the changeover. Quite often it will miss lots of posts I haven't read and I have no idea why.

TFC, what are the 'rules' for the software deciding whether or not I have read a post?

Essentially this system is cookie based.

A user logs in and the cookie reveals activity since your last visit.

If a user remains inactive, or logs out, the cookie then assumes you have read all you wish and ends the session. The clock and counters are reset ready for your next visit, at which time the icons will only reflect new posts since the end of your last session.

So, if there were a thread you didn't view/read, with say 5 new posts in it, and your session ends (through the 'no activity' clause or logging out) those five posts will be then marked as 'read' and not carried over to the next session. no previous activity is carried over once a session ends.

Basically, the end of a session wipes the sleight clean and starts monitoring for new posts (to show on your next visit) but only from that point forward.

Hope this, somewhat repetitive, explanation makes sense.

It does make sense, I think.

If I had multiple windows open, would it 'reset' when I closed the first or last one?
If it's the last one that would make more sense as I think the ones I've been missing are the ones that have been made while I was logged in but reading something else.

It would be the last one, although, an extended period of inactivity would have the same effect as closing the window/tab/session.

I access the forum from different devices phone, laptop and computer at work etc etc so if I close the screen on each device will it mean that the post count will be where I left it the next time I open the forum up?

Apologies if this is a stupid question.

AFAIK the database resets the counters for the account at the end of the last active session (or prolonged period of inactivity) irrespective of where or how that session was conducted, it's a time thing as opposed to location/device.

i.e. if I were to go in to the office now and logon to the forum it would only show me new posts since I closed this session from home, as opposed to since yesterday evening when I left the office and logged off the forum there.

what if you never log out? ie my home browser always is logged into GM so when I refresh the screen it should show me the new posts in a thread I've already contributed to, however, it seems to not be doing that even though there can be many additional entries

Logged in from work at 5.30ish Tuesday night, came home and did some more posts answering posts I'd replied on and could see the thread had new posts, all good so far.
Then I opened browser via the iPad Wed am and it doesn't show any new posts on threads I'd posted on last night, so maybe the legend issue is iPad specific as I hadn't logged out and still on same ip.
