Lefty texted Tim Finchem from the 6th fairway at The Memorial...

Mobile phones - bane of my life. On my weekly commute from Manchester to London I sit in the quiet zone for the peace and quiet. Signs everywhere tell you it's the quiet zone, announcements tell you it's the quiet zone but on every journey without fail either a couple of phones start ringing or someone answers it and has a loud conversation - usually starting with the words "Can't talk long, I'm in the quiet zone". Is it a sense of self importance that they can't be unavailable or is it just pig ignorance?
On the golf course my mobile is switched off. If you're waiting for an emergency/urgent call coming through then don't go out on the course for 4 hours!
I've thought about the blockers but unfortunately it's illegal in the UK. Oh, and I work for a Telco.

Totally agree with you, Lee. Total pig ignorance is how I see it which is why you still see so many people driving and using a mobile phone at the same time. Same goes for using them in restaurants, cinemas and theatres.

Tiger Woods was asked recently about on course distractions such as people taking pictures and he just said these things do happen but why not just turn the sound effect off? Simples.

What a stupid generalisation. Me and HID share a car and don't really have any family down here we can contact incase of emergency, so if she needs to get hold of someone in case of any emergency (relative that has been taken to hospital or suddenly, i.e. **unexpectedly** taken ill) then it's me she will need to contact as she can't just jump in a car and leave as I will probably have it if I'm up at the golf club.

I make no apologies for having my phone switched on when I'm playing golf. It's on silent either in my back pocket or in my bag and I'll check it 2 or 3 times in an entire round.

Totally agree. We're a one car family too although HID tends to drop me off so she can have the car and go and do her own thing. However with a mother still ill in hospital there is no way I'm not going to have my phone with me in case I need to get up there. I check it a couple of times, usually on the 9th as this hole takes you back to the car park should I need to dash off and again at 14 as I could cut down 18 from there if there was a need. On the plus side HID knows the pro shop number (and the pro) and so worse case scenario they would send a buggy out to me.

If I was going to a golf event, work meeting or a film I'd always ensure it was on silent/vibrate and would never dream of using it there and then. Its just that some people don't have basic courtesy anymore and anyone who watches PGA golf coverage knows that US golf fans are hardly fussed about etiquette anyway so phones on the course won't even register with them

As was said earlier on "it's not the phone it's the idiot using it", my mobile has never been turned off since I got it - it just lives on silent virtually all the time.

Not difficult.

Witnessed a long argument on the train between a lawyer and the train guard. The passenger started having a long conversation at a fair volume and ignored comments about the quiet zone. The guard then came and asked them to move the conversation outside of the carriage. The lawyer passenger then started arguing that the instructions were to switch mobiles to silent which they had done and there was no instruction not to talk so therefore they were going to continue the conversation. After 15 minutes of increasingly heated discussion the rest of the coach joined in by asking the guard to throw the passenger off at the next stop.
Eventually they moved to another coach which would have solved the problem in the first place.
Why do people think that they are above any rules especially when it comes to the precious mobile phone.
I fear that even with plenty of notices and instructions in place at golf events you will still have people who inadvertantly or deliberately ignore them.

I drive to and from work- prob in the car for about 90 mins a day- I reckon I see at least 12 blatantly on the phone when driving one handed round corners.............if I see 12 in that timeframe there must be thousands each day, how come the police never seem to catch them

FYI - I can see your deleted posts ;) - You appear to not have grasped my post...The bit I quoted of your post is a stupid generalisation. I agree with you wholeheartedly on the Quiet Zone issue.

It wasn't long ago that mobile 'phones didn't exist, now it appears that people can't exist without them. They are always talking about urgent calls. When were they ever pulled off the golf course by the secretary because they were wanted on the 'phone. Never.
Totally agree cant people play 18 holes of golf without their mobile phones?,BAN MOBILE PHONES FROM ALL GOLF COURSES! ,just enjoy the game. What is it with people nowdays they just cant seem to relax....

Bloody big brother.

What are these mobile phones you are talking about ?

:D

It's like your phone at home, but without the wires. They look a bit like this

Managed to breathe out then deleted it:D. Spending all week looking after my two girls who are developing frightening teenage tendencies and moods is shortening my already short fuse.

I've often wondered that. One of the joys of mobiles is that you can take a picture without a shutter sound. I'll never get why people want to take pictures with a noise when they don't have to. You could get some great shots of pros in their backswing and they'd never need to know. except of course, you left the shutter noise on for god knows what reason.

They catch in excess of 170,000 a year - which gives you some idea of how many are doing it.

Until they make it as morally unacceptable as drink/driving it won't change.........

You see a dozen a day.........I see 3-4 dozen..!

I thought driving instructors had their eyes closed in terror most of the time Ian ?:)

What we need is a broom-handled chipper with a satnav and a built in mobile 'phone, then we could really have a moan.
