pathetic? remember this conversation when another hatfield/potters bar happens. pathetic is being sent out to do a job, without the correct tools/ short of staff. i take you are in management parmo? u are clearly bitter to the working man!

Sorry Parmo but I disagree and think pathetic is poor. There are clearly issues but as someone who commutes daily I do so in the assumption that the track and rolling stock are safe. Clearly if there are issues concerning the way this is being done (under resourced, under funded, ill equipped) and that changes to working practices make it hard to maintain even the current status quo then it raises issues. I'm not advocating a strike as one of millions who will be inconvenienced and as there is no other way to get to work (I don't drive and the bus is only once an hour and takes nearly two hours on a scheduled route) I'll be forced to use annual leave if I have to stay at home.

The point is that the workers feel there is a legitimate case here that the management are refusing to discuss. I'm not an expert and to be honest not overly fussed with the whys but I do think that if they have a legitimate claim that they have a right to take industrial action. Whether it will resolve the dispute is questionable but if it brings about discussion that protects the ongoing safety of commuters then it can't be all bad.

In my book its a given that those on the front line (qualified nursing staff and HCA's, police officers, fire and other rescue services) are underpaid to perform the duties they do and the hours it involves. It has been since I can remember and the low pay was always a reason I never wanted to join any of these services. The point is that there are those out there that make that choice. They know the salary and can always change. They aren't being held to ransom to do the job. So while on the one hand I do feel sorry for them and feel they have been let down by successive governments not given them the payrises they deserve, they do have the choice to leave.

Untill I can actually get through all the rubbish spouted by Bob Crow, management, media, posts on this Forum, etc, etc and get to THE FACTS, I'm not going to put myself either side of the fence.

And I can't find the facts. But, what I do see however is Bob Crow using his usual aggressive tactits which endears him to no-one other than the militants. As usual he is saying that safety is ultimately the reason for the action. Is this actually true, or is it a ploy to try to get the public, and more importantly to him, the railworkers, on his side?

From my experience with the HSE, if there was a safety issue wouldn't they have been all over this like a rash?

Or have I missed something???

As I said, I am on the fence but am leaning a little to one side as without the full facts I can only make a judgment based on what I hear and past experience of the main parties involved.

well pants,as ive said before, this didnt just happen in past few wks. since 2006(when all the private rail companies became Network Rail), we have been promised harmonisation on our terms and conditions by NR.They have now decided that they will pay off 1500 staff when we are already seriously understaffed! This is where the issue of safety comes in, how can we maintain a SAFE railway, if we do not have enough staff to do it?
The rail regulator has served an improvement notice already on NR in wales,as staff are being asked to patrol track without adequate protection from trains....SAFETY!
So yes safety is the straw that finally broke the camels back, but this has been an ongoing dispute for 4 yrs!
We are being asked to do more and more work without the correct staffing levels, which can only lead to shoddy work and unsafe track!
Mark my words, the railways are heading for another hatfield/grayrigg/potters bar.
All of these disasters can be traced back to poor staffing/ maintenance(do the research online)
So, to sum up, the RMT did not just decide" lets have a strike, and upset the public" we were left with no choice,as NR and the RMT have had many,many meetings over the past 4 years,and got nowhere! hope there are enough facts for you there! :)
