He took the 2 club length drop and the ball rolled (almost) another club length due to the side slope. Same applies to you & I.

bob i find that pretty scary that your mate off scratch dont no that it can roll 2 club lengths away aslong as not nearer the hole before you have to re drop,
I agree - worrying that a scratch man doesn't know the rule but I guess off that figure he doesn't get as much chance to be at one with it as I am especially given how thick and unplayable our rough is getting

Lots of people don't know it's allowed to roll up to 2 club lengths and they try to keep it 'within the tee pegs'..... more the fool them!

not been funny gary but you should no it if your playing competion golf every weekend it is a pretty basic rule that you will use regular for staked tress,penalty drops etc, bobs friend off scratch must have played alot of comps to get down to that level thats the scarey thing and will of taken plenty of drops in that time not all of em but must of had a few that rolled outside his markers but still within the allotted distance,rule books are free and anybody can read them, not for 1 minute am i claiming to be a rules guru but i do try to learn as much as possible cos i dont want to get it wrong when out on the course,

This is one quite a few people don't know or they think the limit is one club length.
I remember one occasion when a guy I was playing with dropped a ball from a lateral water hazard and it rolled a few inches outside the tee marking 2 club lengths, He was going to pick it up to re-drop it until I told him it was fine. It would have been painful to have had to ping him an extra shot especially as in his mind he was trying to stick to the rules.

So, you mark out your two club lengths with tees in order to take a drop. You take your stance and drop the ball in the correct manner within the two club lengths, how far can the ball roll after you've dropped the ball ?

2 club lengths from the point where it first struck the course, subject to some other restrictions (e.g. not nearer the hole than where the ball originally lay etc etc.).
"Rule 20-2(c)
c. When to Re-Drop
A dropped ball must be re-dropped, without penalty, if it:
(i) rolls into and comes to rest in a hazard;
(ii) rolls out of and comes to rest outside a hazard;
(iii) rolls onto and comes to rest on a putting green;
(iv) rolls and comes to rest out of bounds;
(v) rolls to and comes to rest in a position where there is interference by the condition from which relief was taken under Rule 24-2b (immovable obstruction), Rule 25-1 (abnormal ground conditions), Rule 25-3 (wrong putting green) or a Local Rule (Rule 33-8a), or rolls back into the pitch-mark from which it was lifted under Rule 25-2 (embedded ball);
vi) rolls and comes to rest more than two club-lengths from where it first struck a part of the course; or
(vii) rolls and comes to rest nearer the hole than:
(a) its original position or estimated position (see Rule 20-2b) unless otherwise permitted by the Rules; or
(b) the nearest point of relief or maximum available relief (Rule 24-2, 25-1 or 25-3); or
(c) the point where the original ball last crossed the margin of the water hazard or lateral water hazard (Rule 26-1).
If the ball when re-dropped rolls into any position listed above, it must be placed as near as possible to the spot where it first struck a part of the course when re-dropped.
Note 1: If a ball when dropped or re-dropped comes to rest and subsequently moves, the ball must be played as it lies, unless the provisions of any other Rule apply.
Note 2: If a ball to be re-dropped or placed under this Rule is not immediately recoverable, another ball may be substituted."
Note 1 is interesting. Imagine this: you drop from casual water near the green, as per the rules, onto a bank. The ball comes to rest. You go to your bag to get a club and meanwhile the ball rolls onto the green and into the hole! - Result! :lol:

Yep, I was just waiting to see what some of the others were going to say.You drop within the correct number of clublengths, but the ball can only roll two clublengths from the point it strikes the ground
