Probably been done to death but I'm in the market for a new laptop. £450 max is my budget, general "all rounder" is what I'm after and for the wife to complete university assignments etc.

Any recommendations and links if possible greatly appreciated.

I know nowt about laptops.

Anything with an Intel I3 or I5 7xxx or 8xxx cpu, 4 or 8 Gb of Ram will do, but the main thing is getting a SSD hard drive.

Do not go below 256 Gb of space

Enjoy :)

Agree with Fundy's option, plenty of storage for assignments etc. and enough power to cope with most things. You can always upgrade the SSD HD later if you need to, they're cheap enough.

It's a M.2 drive as well so you can upgrade and get better transfer rates. I run a HP with i5, 8GB RAM and a NVMe drive and its boot up and task execution is lightening fast.

Sounds good! have just dropped a 480GB Crucial SSD in the wifes gaming laptop and it boots to Win10 in about 16 seconds from switch on, it's very impressive tbh.

Have you checked your video drivers are updated accordingly. What is the screen type and resolution?
I have seen 144hz screens with the new NVidia drivers suffering bad flicker.

Sorry, just to add the Nvidia flicker issues I have seen seems to be associated to Display Port connections and doesn't affect HDMI or DVI.

Yes, have no problems, like above probably check/re-install display drivers.

Also running NVidia on my desktop 144hz screen with no issues as well.

Reviving an old thread rather than starting a new one......

Anyone got any experience of Lenovo laptops? Looking for new laptops for me and Mrs Colch. Looking for minimum of SSD, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage and from answers above i5 processor. They won't be used for gaming but hers will need to run some design software and mine will be running data processing software for work. Ideally around £500 each but could stretch the budget if necessary.

EDIT - and at least 15" screen size.

I have a cheaper/lower spec i3 Lenovo laptop (similar other spec), albeit it seems to be Mrs Fundys now, lightly used but cant fault it. SSD boots super quick and its handled anything weve thrown at it with ease albeit thats less strenuous than your requirements. Seems well built and the 15" screen is more than adequate

Cheers for that. I know someone above said they wouldn't touch Dell but I found this one that I'm considering....

have had Dell desktop replacements in the past (17" non portable ones) and couldnt fault them personally, guess we all have different personal experiences that affect our views (for eg the bad ones ive had have been toshiba and asus and id steer clear of those), think the components and customer service the most important these days

I'm late to the party with this, but...

I'm off to university in May and have just bought a Chromebook.

I'm about half way through a Quality Management Systems diploma and will be moving into an Operational Management diploma after. All paid for by work.

Depends on requirement. I just need word processing and cloud storage so these are fine.

Like anything. All based around requirement but if a laptop is a must, I like Fraggers choice.
