If you get rid of vista you still have to replace it with something

and thats going to cost some dosh, if its vista, with a 2Ghz core 2 duo CPU then its going to be about 4 years old, which is quite old for a lappy, and certainly not a machine that you would want to spend a lot of cash on.

Best try to clean it up using CC cleaner /Defrag etc as others have suggested, , but if that doesnt work then a reformat is your only other viable option

As for the USB Boost on start up, yes this will work, it should improve start up times by 10%, so rather than taking 2 minutes it will take 1 minute 45, big wow.

The other problem with Laptops and USB sticks is that they get snapped off especially as the boost stick has to be in there virtually all the time.

Always hated vista. Unfortunatly the only realistic option to avoid vista would be going back to xp. Genuine oem copies can be bought for £15. I did it on my free laptop from carphone warehouse. Still a bag of poo though.

Did the laptop come with back up disks.

When in doubt add more JAM

I would slap a windows 7 on it, you can "do it over" vista. Should speed things up nicely. Also a good clean out of junk afterwards works too.

New hardware is a consideration, Ive never had an issue since I started using the i5 and i7s.

I was being tongue in cheek Phil, vista does my head in! Its almost as bad as ME was

The trouble nowadays is with bband and the amount of sneeky programs around its so easy to install loads of tosh without knowing it.

I generally do a backup and reformat every 6-9 months, maybe overkill but as a gamer and with 3 teenage kids who install plenty of cack on my pc it makes a massive difference. Think of the PC like a car, you service your car every 12 month with new oil etc, a pc is the same, a reformat does work wonders, you will be surprised how much cack we install over a short period that just ends up sitting there doing nowt but hog resources.

If you want to go the whole hog down the reformat route, buy a SSD** for the harddrive, that would defo speed things up.

Get rid of Vista.. slow as a dead dog. Microsoft was offering upgrades to Windows 8 for £25. Alternatively, u might find cheap licences to Windows 7. At 3GB the Ram is a starting to be on a lower side, so could do with some additional ram (Check what is the max that Vista 32 bit supports before buying). Just initial thoughts.

IMHO, better option to downgrade to an XP.. very dependable and should have you on your way.
