My old laptop backpack is falling apart, so thought of getting a new one. Still tossing between a briefcase style v/s backpack. Was looking at prices for Tumi bags and not sure why they are more expensive than the laptops they carry?

briefcase style every time, backpacks are for kids and tourists. Mine is a cheap and cheerful caselogic one, but i have my eyes on a rather expensive one! One day i will treat myself..

How much travelling do you do with it? I've just gone from a backpack to a larger wheelie briefcase type that is still acceptable as cabin baggage on flights. I don't to take a case now.

If your after smaller, I'd go with a briefcase type with a shoulder strap.

I went to the local indie bag retailer and picked up a really nice leather briefcase style with shoulder strap for around £100. Ok so not dirt cheap, but it looks professional, has bags of room for other stuff, including enough room for when I'm travelling overnight. If it's more than one night I have a cheap slieve thing for the laptop which counts as a personal item on flights and a slightly larger carry on case for clothes etc.

I used to have a briefcase, it is great if you commute by car, but find that difficult when you have to fight for space on the trains or tubes. I dont see the benefit of a TSA-approved one as I dont fly into the US everyweek. The only downside for a strap-ed briefcase is that all the load ends up on one shoulder (though you can move it around)

I had visions of you responding first, so you did not disappoint.... If you gift me one, i will tell you all about Hyperconverged Integrated Systems Appliances ;)

Not sure either, don't think the Tumi gear is super high quality or has any sort of style. How much stuff other than the computer do you carry? I switch between a backpack when i need a lot of folders or if its just a notebook I use something like this

Depends on where and how you take your laptop with you. If you cycle, definitely go for a backpack. If you travel a lot with it and normally have a suitcase or anything else you carry one handed or over one shoulder, also go for the backpack. If you normally travel with a large backpack as your main item of luggage, then of course go for the briefcase style laptop case, because you have only one back. Apart from that ... just take the one that looks nicer. And don't spend too much money on it. You can normally get very good quality ones in bargain stores or outlets (like last years models etc. ... it's like with golf clubs, you don't really need the most current one).

It depends on what you're lugging with your laptop. I have to sling around loads of PDA's, wires, chargers etc. So I have a big backpack as it just makes life easier.
laptop + paperwork- satchel
laptop + paperwork + assorted crap- backpack

Pick one that doesn't shout laptop - e.g. a cheap briefcase: unless all your trips are via your car to an office rather than flights and public transport and you can keep an eye on it!

If you travel make sure all stuff is backed up and encrypted - small, solid-state, removable hard-drive kept in your pocket is a good plan

I've thought about my laptop bag. It's black and goes over my shoulder.

I usually have my laptop, cables, stationary, notebook, headsets. As I m old school I do a fair bit of printouts for reading after work. I generally never carry my clothers for an overnighter.

're Tumi, the only one that catches my fancy is
