Kindle on Amazon fire

Just started to use kindle on my fire tablet to start catching up on some books I can t seem to buy as paperback.

Is the kindle app the only way use as a reader ?

Don't seem to be able to use bookmarks etc so looking for alternatives.

Not used bookmarks on mine but think if you just tap in the top right corner it adds a blue mark so this may be what you are after
