Watching the PGA golf on Friday, Keegan Bradley was on the 17th hole. They showed he'd walked something like 12600 steps, 6.3 miles and used about 1800 calories (I can't remember the precise figures but near enough). I had to rewind back and double check I hadn't misread them. 1800 calories !!! If that was ever correct forget weight watchers just play golf !
 
Remember reading something one time were it was breaking down how many you burn with trolley buggy and carrying per round. I think it was a post on here if I remember right.

Its the 19th most of us need to stay out off, what was burned off soon goes on again lol
 
Will the heat they play in help shed the calories also ?
 
Do they count his mental pre shot routine in the steps? He does about 400 steps rocking back and forth lining up every shot :D

Golf is a very good calorie burner though :thup:
 
About 1300 calories in a big-mac meal.

Slow walking burns about 800 calories for a 10 mile walk, not sure how they get Keegan to burn so many, it's not like he's carrying his own clubs!! :confused: ... nervous energy?

I am amazed at the claims of calorie burning at the Humana Challenge. Anyone who has used a treadmill knows exactly how hard it is to burn 100 calories. A really hard gym session of well over an hour of running, cycling, resistance etc will burn about 1000 calories. Roughly speaking, running one mile will burn about 100 calories. To claim around 2,000 calories per round, using a caddie is just utter nonsense.
I listened to Bill Clinton speak passionately about getting people to do more exercise which is largely what Humana and the Clinton Foundation are all about. But if they are serious about this they should be prepared to be honest and truthful about exercise. I am sure they think more people will take it on if they tell them how easy it is, but the fact is 2,000 calories takes a tremendous amount of burning. If people were made aware of just how hard they have to work to lose a junk food meal, they may reconsider having the meal in the first place.
 
I think it is misleading as I'm sure they said on the commentary on Thursday or Friday that it includes everything from the moment they reach the course, not just the time they are playing. Either way, it seems a bit high.
 
A piece of gym equipment typically does not count the normal background calorie burn rate, which is something in the region of 100 cal/hr. I suspect the golf figures include that background rate of burn. Golf does burn a few calories but isn't a particularly good form of aerobic exercise.

As for the steps, that is perfectly plausible. I have a Fitbit activity monitor which (amongst other things) measures steps, and on data I play 18 holes, that is often 15000+.
 
Nick Faldo said it was from the moment they got to the course, including range warm up etc. So they were looking at probably 7/8 hours of total calories.

I've seen that pushing a set of clubs & playing 18 holes on a 6k yard course is around 1500 calories. If you could do that everyday, I imagine we'd all lose a few pounds. Once a week isn't really enough though!
 
I would imagine the bars of chocolate, beers etc consumed during the round more than counteract any calories 'burnt' :whistle:
 
Regardless of the accuracy of the calorie count credit to Bill Clinton in trying to promote exercise. Far better to play a round of golf than sit on your fat backside playing video games.
 
I used to use My fitness Pal and that has golf on it. 4 hours was something like 1300 calories if I remember correctly.

I absolutely agree. I thought he spoke well and is clearly passionate about excercise since his own health problems. Was very interesting hearing him talk about Nelson Mandela too.
I still think they should be honest about calorie burn though. The claims were so far wide of the mark they were basically fictional. If you want people to lose weight and keep it off then you need to tell them the truth. Otherwise it will never work.

I disagree these claims are fictional. It's proven there isn't much difference between jogging and walking, if he was jogging for 4 hours I'm sure nobody would give 1800 calories a second thought.

Warm up and 4 hours of golf will burn around 1800 calories for sure, especially in that heat as the body works harder to keep cool.
 
I lost 4 stone in my 1st 18 months of taking up the game so you must burn more calories then you'd expect. Granted I played at least 2 times a week which kept me away from the fridge for longer then normal..
 
Last winter I was at my heaviest ever having put on 12 lbs over the winter period but as soon as the sun came out and I was able to play 3 times a week the weight fell off and I was back down to my normal weight.

Funnily enough the year before when we had a good winter and we missed very few weekends, I put very little weight on.

This winter the weather has been atrocious and I have put a stone on, so I'm just hoping and praying that the sun comes out soon :rolleyes:
