Just upgraded my sons graphic card and PSU

Son has a basic gaming PC and plays a lot of Steam download games but needed an upgrade

Just swopped out AMD Radeon HD 6670 for AMD Radeon 7870 and upgraded the PSU to a new 700w job

Loads of wires and connectors and a bit scary but end result is good, high to ultra high graphics on his games son is well pleased


Total upgrade cost £220.00
 
Sweet, whats the CPU and how much RAM?
and what operating system is it running?

always nice when a DIY job comes off, especially in uncharted waters
 
Win 8, Quad Core Processor 8GB RAM, 1TB Hard drive

The PC runs very fast but a lot of heat generated as you an imagine

I believe some of these graphic cards run at nearly 100 deg C !

HD Gaming on Ultra settings make XBOX and PS3 look tame
 
I needed an upgrade to my PC back in 2009/2010.
I swatted up as much as I could & decided to build my own, and no, I'm not a computer bod in the slightest.
I bought all the bits & put a day aside for assembly. I was soooooooo careful & methodical and after about three hours I pushed the button & the thing came to life ........................ I felt fantastic, I'd just assembled my own spec PC from scratch, and it's still working to this very day.
The moral of the story is that anyone with a modicum of common sense can assemble their own PC as long as they are careful. It really is a lot easier than you'd think.
I ended up with a high-end PC for a fraction of the cost of a shop bought one ............... sorted!

My 6870 does not :) currently 64 under load and over clocked #maxres

I have an i7 920 OCed to 3.8, had it since 2008, I bet I can get another 5 years out of this bad boy as nothing has come close to using its full power in the 5 years I have had it.

I am on my 2nd PSU, monitor and graphics card though. I do like the 6870, doubt I will need to change that for a year or two either.

I remember back in the day, installing my first memory card into an old gateway PC. I pulled the clip to the side on the slot, placed the memory stick in and pushed, but nothing, way way way to much resistance or so I thought. So I pushed a little harder and crack, when I opened my eyes, the memory card was in place the little clips either side had nipped up to hold the memory, but after the cracking sound I thought the mobo was broke, but no all was good and up she started, this was my first scary intro into building and repairing PC's, bugger that was nearly 25yrs ago now.
