being in the trade I have fitted and energy management system to my house it senses the outside temp and adjust the heating I also have a self regulating boiler and pump system that lowers its consumption of gas according to the temp of the house,i am fitting a single phase reducer on the incoming main this reduces the power coming in from a standard 240v down to 210v as all domestic appliances will run on 180 - 240v this will also reduce the power consumption,the most cost effective way to reduce cost is having cavity wall and loft insulation,there are new products on the market for those with no cavity and in a lot of cases it is totally free.

3 bedroom semi 13 years old.....
with scottish power for 6 years....recently gone up to approx £105 per month.....they are pushing it now(was around £75 2 years ago) ..if this keeps up will consider dumping them

Just remember, all the providers are having to pay for their 'green' credentials somehow... and that somehow is us the consumer 
So bills are going up, not because of what we've used, but because we are paying to help the providers provide us with 'greener' electricity

And, of course they have to be seen to be providing a good profit to their shareholders... Which could be anyone with a pension fund... Fund managers like to invest in business's that can provide a 'safe' payout making utility companies a perfect choice...

You are entitled to set your DD at whatever amount you wish, the amounts they give are 'forecasts' (they will bill you after 6 months). As for the estimated read situation, easiest way to fix that is ring them and provide a read.
Part of the problem with UK market is that consumers just expect/demand fuels, then arent prepared to pay, the levels of debt in these businesses is staggering.

And I'm with Scottish Power - 3 bed 1918 semi with TVs, laptops and PCs etc - so how come mine has just jumped from £157 a month (bad enough) to £242.86 - I have asked for a review. Ludicrous - something is not right and I haven't a clue what.

Gas is £25 per month and electric is £35 for a 3 bed mid 40's semi. I submit monthly readings online for gas. Can't now for electric as we have a smart meter. Also turn off everything electrical when it's not in use.

Well you might think so but I moved to SP on a fixed price deal last year and it was better than I was on - and no introductory deals that I recall. Only rocketed in February. We are just an ordinary bunch living in an ordinary - albeit fairly old - semi.

If you search somewhere on the forum, Justone and myself discussed this a few months ago and i listed all of the kWh used for both gas and leccy... HTH

Leccy - 1164KWh @ 10.899p (standing charge 85 days @ 32.15p) £154.19
Gas - 217 units = 2386KWh @ 3.572p (standing charge 85 days @ 34.010p) £114.14
Total for period £268.33, minus web and DD discount £-7.21
+ VAT £13.06 (5% VAT)
FYI the calculation for the gas charge is:
gas units used x calorific value (38.7) x volume correction (1.022640) / 3.6 = Gas used expressed in KWh
My actual use for the last 12 months is 13755KWh Gas and 5169KWh of leccy
