During the week i leave for work at 7.30 and get home at 8 ish (p.m) with a 80 min journey each way

Have three children (10 / 9 / 5) who at the weekends play Football / Rugby etc...

Can i justify joining a club or continue to pay and play? am starting to get my head round joining - but sounds like madness?

I did not join a club until I stopped playing rugby. Same as you, no time in the week and I could only abandon the family for one sport at the weekends so not worth it for me.

There are clubs that only charge £100 or so for membership then you pay a small green fee each time you play.
This way, you get a handicap, can play comps and not splash out a fortune for only 10/20 games a year or whatever.
Where do you live/play?

Short of finding a new job or ditching the family looks like pay and play your best option, maybe see if you can pick up some different games at diff courses on this forum?

As above, My local pay and play offeres a membership where by you £60.00 per year (April - March) for this you get:

A sunday swindle running every sunday, just turn up pay you green fee and get put into a group.

Congu registered handicap.

32 comps per year - these range from monthly medals to inter club matches

And reserved 9am-10am tee slots on sunday.

They also offer a loyalty card where you can save £3 or £4 per greenfee.

it may be worth speaking with your local pay and plays as it seems most of the P&P ones around me offer a simular set up although fee's vary from £50 per year up to £200.

I am in a similar position as you GBC, work 5-6 days, 3 kids 16, 15 and 12 and no missus to do the housework etc, looking at playing 2-3 times a month more in summer

I almost joined a club this month but wasnt sure if I would even use it until the spring so decided against it.

I wish there was a club like the one bobmac states as I really want to play a few comps and get a handicap and for £100 or so it would be a no brainer for me

work out what is most beneficial to your current needs & circumstances

being in a club also has the benefits of practice areas and some have par3 courses attached for short game practice or a few quick holes after work in the summer

good luck whichever way you go :)

For a lot of clubs it means a big outlay especially those with joining fees on top so unless you can find one as Bob describes you have to weigh up how much time you'll have to play against the cost. I'm guessing the average cost per round will be significantly higher than if you pay and play. Of course if you get the kids into it as well you'll have the ideal excuse to be at the club all the time

Thanks guys for the advise.

Will have to look around locally and see what deals are about.

My 10 year is in the Academy at our local club but still wouldn't mean that just Father and Son could disappear for four hours on a Sunday - especially as he also loves his Rugby and he has a 9 yr old brother and 5 yr old sister

Just nice to hear that many of us are in the same boat!
