Jobs for the youngsters !

"National Service" is a term we automatically link to military service, but it doesn't have to be.

National service could be a whole host of things, all with the common link of each of us doing something productive for our country. Easy option that springs to mind is a year working for the NHS.

From experience, I believe it could be a very good way for some to experience the Forces in the knowledge that it's only for a short, fixed term if it turns out it's not for them.

For others, being obliged to do something of their choice, on minimum wage, from an extensive list of industries could put them in a very good position 12 months later.
That bit in green for me is potentially a good idea as it adds to experience of healthcare perspective and would help those in need.

The bit in Red nope, no way at all. People that are forced into the armed services will not have the same drive, passion and character to do the job to best of their ability (you will get the odd one's that end up enjoying it, but imo the majority would resent it and be a burden).

I wont presume to know your background as I don't know you. But in my experience its often those that have never done any form of military service and faced the issues it brings that often suggest bringing in national service.

As one of the older forum members I can quite honestly state that I dont think there is any place in this country for national service. A lot of youngsters now go to university from school which they leave in their early 20's (or later) they have mounting debt and a need to work. By the time they're 30'ish they probably need to be on, or getting on, the housing ladder and possibly getting settled to have children if they aren't to leave it too late - so, national service would be, for most, a total impossibility!

You mention student debt, but what percent actually do earn enough to ever pay it off? I think this should be a message to shake up the further education system and get rid of many courses and universities

I like the "it doesn't just mean military idea.

We had a load of 15 year olds touring a Coastguard Station...they arrived looking bored and left really animated. They didn't realise what went on there, and accessible it was a career.

Just needs some creative thought and inspirational parents/teachers

But my suggestion is that the Forces are just one of the options, it would never be mandatory.

Currently on my 2nd stint, I noted your recent job offer with great interest ?
Top man what are you doing 2nd stint in..
I will admit though I have since put through an expression of interest about the possibility of that return but to a different branch.

Really disappointed [but not surprised] to see the lumping of all teenagers as workshy morons.
The ones I know are hard working, smart and engaged, probably much better citizens than the OP and some of his supporters were when they were Teddy Boys/Greasers/Mods.

PS...I thought the OP was a wind up, should have known better on here.

Happy to pm if you have any rejoining queries.
I do have a couple of questions actually regarding quals and retrade, as my last role didn't need a lot of qualifications to join and not sure how they're judging role suitability what with the close down of recruitment offices at moment as been dealing solely via email and the odd call, so will pop them over to you after I've been for a bloody cold run ??

Thousands of teenagers will have no jobs as we exit this lockdown, all they seem to be worried about is not seeing their friends, being able to go to the pub or concerts.
The armed forces are advertising for recruits - all solveable bring back National Service - my old drill Sergeant would soon put things into perspective for them.
Will they be able to pay their student loans on army pay?

Atm I wouldn’t call a year working for the NHS an easy option!
But get your drift.

Interestingly, my ex army colleagues are also anti national service as they don't want conscripts for many of the reasons above

If you watch some of the old stuff post WWII like Korea and Malaya they show a lot of antagonism between the journey men and the conscripts. Just look at the Americans in the 1970s and all the 1000s who did not want to be in the army or Vietnam and all the social unrest it caused in America itself.

I dont have any experience of the Forces, but I dare say it takes quite a bit of time (and effort) to turn a raw recruit, even a willing one, into a well trained & useful soldier/sailor/airman. I'm not sure the services would want to expend their resources on folk who are mostly going to walk away after 12/24 months.
