Thousands of teenagers will have no jobs as we exit this lockdown, all they seem to be worried about is not seeing their friends, being able to go to the pub or concerts.
The armed forces are advertising for recruits - all solveable bring back National Service - my old drill Sergeant would soon put things into perspective for them.

I for one would rather see a Social Service before I see a Military Service.
A little more in keeping with 2020 and not involving guns.

What totally stupid idea for a 21st century army.

We are not at war with Palestine , Syria or similar where there is a need for all to be army trained

As already said it would lead to a lot of many mentally damaged people and on the other side a lot of thugs.

I like this, getting them working in the community, make them see all the stuff that gets forgotten. Gardening, rubbish collection, street cleaning, graffiti removal ... creating a sense of pride.

How about getting them out in the fields picking all the veg that may be left to rot. Now that we can’t get Europeans in, someone needs to do it.
And also, as a current serving person, the last thing I want is a load of disinterested people trying to fix aeroplanes

Will the farmer have a shotgun for those that are workshy scrotes in this hypothetical situation? If so I’m all for it!

I bet the military would love 1,000's of disinterested teenagers turning up and wasting their time. It's an old idea loved by those not involved in either having to take the training or being trained.
tens of thousand of disinterested had to do it and were the better off for it, became better for it.

I once watched a documentary about National Service. I get the impression that the only people who did well out of it were the locals knocking shop owners.

IT also destroyed a lot.

Possibly.....but the world is different now and so are the forces.

And my thinking was more about the skills and trades the folk learned. Cousin's kid has gone in the Navy. Physically never in better shape and getting close to a degree in radio communications.

Doesn't need to be about fighting and jingoism. But I agree, some are not suitable and would not benefit.

Interestingly, my ex army colleagues are also anti national service as they don't want conscripts for many of the reasons above

Nice insight there with lots of in depth research no doubt.

Can we also sign up golfers as ask they seem to be worried about is playing golf again?

Personally am retired - nothing to do but play golf and go shopping, not been further than a mile from home for 8 weeks, bored to tears, if they opened up the Courses we`d be posting on the Rules section instead. all a bit tongue in cheek.
