I finally have have my first official handicap of 27, I know its high but it's a start. Soon I will soon be entering bandit country.

First proper competition on Sunday (Stabelford).

:D

Good luck, don't forget to water the horse :D

Surprised at a club giving a starting hcp of more than 24 to be honest.

Practice regularly and stay calm with a card in hand and you should do well.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. Played with plenty of people arounnd the 18 - 24 mark in the last couple of weeks and feel as if I have nothing to fear about getting down to that.

First comp = Its a lose/lose situation:

If you win someone will resent it
If you don't win someone will think you're protecting your handicap

:D

Good luck and more than anything just enjoy the day

Why surprised?

The days should be long gone since Handicap Committees could use an arbitrary maximum figure irrespective of what the three cards suggested.

Best of luck! I can't wait to officially join a club and get that handicap figure. I am shooting in the dark at the moment!

It just seems difficult to achieve a 28 handicap (no offence meant) when they have three cards (54 holes to consider) and every high score is changed to a max of a double bogey.

Anyone with a new hcp of 28 has a lot of opportunity to improve quickly and can easily win events. You never get a low handicapper scoring net 63 or so but this happens all to often when players are off 20 plus.

May just be the way its worded but I don't think either of these points is correct

Only the best of the three cards is considered

And this link shows some of the beliefs to be quite mythical

Fingers crossed you score 45 points and irritate all the low handicappers

I missed the back story here but I'm guessing 27 wasn't the lowest of your 3 cards?

Look if he's better than 27, he'll get cut. And if he's way better, he'll get ESR'd. And if he's way way better, the handicap committee will be asked to look at it.

Good luck Sunday, try to remember that EVERY hole is an opporunity to score points, and lots of em if you have a shot or even two on that hole, so play 18 mini comps with yourself and forget about the score until you tot up at the end. A par on a hole you have two shots on is 4 points, so would wipe out a blob hole (if the aim was 36). While you can forget about your overall score, be mindful of your shots on any given hole. You may find yourself with a 6 foot putt for 1 point and there's no point leaving that short, its in or its 0, so if the putt allows then allow for less break and be firm. Most of all, enjoy it, its very exciting preparing for the first comp round and testing your game. Give it socks.

Incorrect, I once lost out having shot level par off my then 7 handicap, for net 64. The winner played off 2!

Everyone should be capable of playing below their handicap every so often, so it's not always a sign that a handicap is too low if they do it occasionally!

Agreed there are exceptions but it is more likely that a high handicapper shoots well below the css.

I see now my use of the word never was wrong.
