Or has it always been.

The amount of charities pleading for £3 pound a week on national tv.

I do give to charity usually at my own discretion, however now it seems you cant watch tv without a plea, and how can a child demand the same
as a badger or bear or monkey, elephant, tiger, the list is endless.

I do remember back in the 90s going to a Donkey sanctuary in Sidmouth where they raked in nearly 3 million a year.

You're not wrong. I remember last Christmas every other ad on the TV was for charity.

I have a number of Direct Debits to charities. You wouldn't believe how many ring and ask if I'd be willing to up the DD, and would I like to include the charity in my Will...

I experienced a new one paying for diesel yesterday.

Paying by card the cashier handed me the payment console and asked me to press YES or NO to agree to a 25p charity donation on top of my fuel.

She said it was a new thing they were trying and she heard some of the big supermarkets were going to be rolling it out soon.

Tiger is still raking in a fortune, no way am I sending him £3 a month. :blah:

You feel for those the charity aims to help yet I agree it can seem too frequent on tv and in an aggressive begging in your face and guilt-trip style. Get a lot of stuff in the mail too, sorry but goes straight into the 'circular file'.

Most of us probably give to one or two charities we favour in our own way, shouldn't be pressured or guilt-tripped into doing more than we can afford.

Some tales of exploitation of the elderly from charities haranguing them for more and more money so you wonder if these tv ads are targeting that demographic as easy pickings? The charity ads seem to be more common on daytime tv too.

Not wanting to take it off track, but equally similar are the number of betting sites.

Ive never been a big gambler, but one thing I don't get is these free spins ones "advertising" it as ....Aztec pyramid.....or other such other-worldly spin games. Does a gambler really care what figures are on the spinning thing, whether its pyramids, cherries or endangered snow leopards??????

I can understand the ackers, special bet ones, but not the above.

RE charity, me arl fella said the same, always ringing him up.

It’s hard for them I guess - a lot of charities are desperate for money but it’s very hard to ask for money without it being in the face - if they didn’t do the hard sell then I guess they wouldn’t get the money they need

The one set of adverts that should be banned are gambling - it’s dangerous

Should be a law for charities to fully disclose what that the money you give is going towards

I know from friends who have worked for charities on the street asking for direct debits. The first 12 months of donations are all for the person working and their bosses, then 25% of future direct debits after those 12 months goes towards the charity.

When the Icelandic banks went kaput some years ago the Cats Protection League had about £12m on deposit - could gave helped a lot of cats had they tried to spend what the public give them to spend!

There is - the income and expenditure of charities are very closely monitored by the Charities Commission. If the charity expenditure in any area is going beyond the bounds of what is expected of it as a charity the Commission can step in. A Charities accounts are publicly available.

If you don't like how Charity DD sign-up works - the sign-up agency has to pay folk and earn some money - then don't sign up through street marketing.

Not as bad as the plethora of gambling companies trying to dupe you into given them your money

Agreed

Almost as bad are the short term money loans - QuickQuid on tv lots presently with their 1,200% APR or whatever. Shockingly dangerous pre-Christmas. Think Govt should be all over this, max APR set by law of say 100%.

They are utterly despicable and disingenous - usually presenting gambling as a fun thing to do with your mates...a pastime. When in fact they are purveyors of misery.

I can’t help but feel some feeling that those charities who can spend hundreds of thousands on chuggers, tv and media advertising don’t really need my money.
I also look at the amount that is actually given to the cause, as opposed to how much is spent on the rest.

They will only spend the money if they are pretty much certain to make a profit after the outlay. The same applies to the pens they send out with letters. The pens cost so little that the opportunity value of someone just using it to straight sign-up to committed giving - or just have it about and visible - is worth it.

Agree with that, if I have to see Ray Winstone (or one of the other celebs) advertising gambling sites, my TV will end up with a size 10 through it.

I totally agree and I'd possibly say the same about alcohol adverts .................. but where do you stop?

TBH if you don't want to give to the charities don't the same as if you saw a gambling ad on TV, would you rush out and gamble?

or anything else that was advertised on TV?

Because I'm currently off work I have seen a lot of day time TV. Some of the charities are just trying to get the sentimental oldies I reckon. There is also a plethora of funeral insurance adverts going around at the minute too. They seem to be making the would be applicant feel guilty for not providing for their own funeral costs.
