Its now getting ridiculous

You're not wrong. I remember last Christmas every other ad on the TV was for charity.

I have a number of Direct Debits to charities. You wouldn't believe how many ring and ask if I'd be willing to up the DD, and would I like to include the charity in my Will...

^^This^^ it’s like emotional blackmail as they’ve always got you.

Just a little reminder that every penny you give to the Poppy Appeal goes to charity, there are no admin costs syphoned off.

It might be emotional blackmail but when I get asked to up my DD they get a choice of go away and not to ring again or I cancel the DD. Funnily enough the two worst for it haven't rang again.

We had a charity run a day at our club. Out of curiousity I looked their accounts submitted over the last couple of years. The records showed no in one and no expenditure! Their web site mentions the thousands raised. I emailed a queiry to the charity but never ever had an answer.

Sometimes, even with registered charity, things aren't what they seem.

I experienced a new one paying for diesel yesterday.

Paying by card the cashier handed me the payment console and asked me to press YES or NO to agree to a 25p charity donation on top of my fuel.

She said it was a new thing they were trying and she heard some of the big supermarkets were going to be rolling it out soon.
Had this a few weeks ago at my local Tesco. On self checkout it was asking if I wanted to round my bill up to contribute to a charity walk they were doing. I had already had to run the gauntlet of money box shakers in the entrance and had some guy selling some holiday thing on the way out. I felt bad when I was leaving as I hadn't contributed. Is that right though? Should I be made to feel that way? I know I am lucky I can even buy a sandwich, but I have to say it did put me off going in. I don't think customers should be made to feel bad or be hassled for donations at every turn when they use your service.

Just the other night we saw the appeal for Syria on TV asking for £3 and Mrs Sweep said you would give them £20 if you thought they wouldn't hassle you for more once they knew you were willing to donate. I do worry that this charity overload just results in a blanket "no" from a lot of people.

Only contribute to 'local' charities nowadays.
No longer give to the NSPCC or Oxfam etc. due to their bully/scare tactics. Plus the issue of their lavish and opulent HQ's (Oxfam especially).

When I get hassled to donate to charities now, I always ask what percentage actually gets to the people after admin costs etc. You won't be surprised to find out that with some it's as little as 3%.
It's big business nowadays.

I never give to the African 'famine' causes. If some of them have enough money for guns and bullets then there is something drastically wrong within the country's own systems. And how much of he aid money actually gets where it is really needed?
