On the mods and what they are tasked to do, I am a member on one of the US forums, which I suspect is built on an identical piece of software as this one. They have a section called the Debate room, which is only visible to members who opt into it. Threads that err on the slightly hotter topics get moved there where the rules are 'lighter touch'. That way, those that are comfortable with a bit of 'edge' opt in and those that don't don't.

simples:sbox:

Nope fraid not mate , GM operate this forum for us to use , through this forum the give us free gifts , fitting oppertunities , days out etc etc etc , the list is too many to get them all in ,

this forum is linked to their web page & is linked to their name so it goes by their rules , their rules that are laid down in black & white for all users or potential users to read & abide by , if someone thinks this is not for them when they read them, they should feel free not to join ..
Im not a moderator or dont want to be one because its a tankless task , but if as an adult someone cant come on here (or anywhere) and discuss, debate & yes even argue without using abusive words, or insulting someone or their beliefs then it is a very poor reflection of that person ..

The forum is good craic , gives great help & great advice, it is a great tool when used correctly ,

But like other things that is just my personal opinon & personaly i choose to enter the free comps & give aways & use the free forum to chat & learn, if abiding by the rules of the people who give me all this free is a condition of membership , ok i agree , because i get alot more from this forum its owners & users than i contribute ,

I'm fine with a bit of a joke about the Pope's resignation (after all won't his boss be a bit baffled - gave him a job for life and he jacks it in) - but on matters of football and religion these jokes can quickly descend into mockery, and then cross the boundary into insulting and offensive. It's best to not let threads get there.

I agree, apart from the black & white bit. It's a whole shade of grey. What someone finds insulting/offensive is subjective, some are too touchy. I'm pretty sure someone on here tried to claim 'jock' was a racist term !!

Yes but if for some reason they do find it insulting or offensive & they contact a mod , the mod has to act in the best intrest of the forum and it would be better to pull something they shouldnt & stop the thread than let it run and all hell break loose .. they simply cant run that risk ..

I totaly agree with you some are too touchy , but if you were a mod &they contacted you , you may very well feel this guy is being a bit sensitive here & has no grounds for complaint , then you can leave it ,
BUT if there is the very slightest inclination that this person is actualy upset by the comment they have to act on the "safe" side ..

Another problem they have to overcome is that we Irish , English , Scotish ,Welsh & all others have different views or meanings on certain words , & also the use of words , are they being used in a bout of banter or not ..

They wont get it right 100% of the time , im sure they will tell you that themselves , but they do most of the time , & without these voluntary mods the forum would cease to exist as GM wont pay someone to do it ..

I have to say I was surprised when I got into work today and saw that the thread was moved, I went in and read the most recent posts and can see exactly why, it wasnt taking a turn for the worst, it had veered left of that again, over a cliff and hit rock bottom.

Bladeplayer, I think we are 100% agreed. I think all the fora have very similar rules and are very concerned about reputation.

i cannot imagine being a mod is an easy job at all. The concept of a debate room still has rules, and abuse should not be tolerated anywhere, but I believe that the mods find it easier to have 2 sections. One which can be stumbled upon by any one and one that is accessible only via opt in.

For example the US one has been debating, gun control. As I am sure you know, that is a subject that very quickly can get people in the US very fired up. There is no abuse, but the exchanges are more direct than a mod might feel comfortable with in the 'public area'

i don't think anyone is looking for a free for all, but one mans banter is another mans abuse.

Just an idea...

Unless it got really ugly after the last time I looked at the thread then I have to say I disagree with you. Not to go over old ground or resurrect what had been said but there are things out there in the big bad world that are unpleasant, factually correct but unpleasant, simply waving the offended flag and complaining because you personally do not like what has been stated is not what forums are about.

This sort of idea was discussed before and was thought of as a no go. The problem is you then start having two "separate" forums which will only lead to division amongst the forum IMO.

But it is what this forum is about. If you don't like it you have the option of trying to change it or putting up with it. Moaning that forum's are about not being offended by something that has been posted is frankly laughable.

I couldn't agree more. I'm all for a bit of banter but as usual some people can take it to far and banter can very quickly become insulting and very offensive to others.

See your point Chris. My experience of it so far has not been like that, if a topic is getting a little warm, the mods move it to the debate room, but I am not aware of any user that exclusively lives in the debate room. Was it tried?

What a load of utter tosh. Don't take bits of what I said and bend it to suit YOUR agenda. So what you are clearly saying is that anytime we disagree with something that may be a bit near the knuckle then wave the offended flag and the thread gets chopped? Utter rubbish, in the past I reported posts that contained what I believe to be an offensive sectarian term - and guess what? Nothing happened. Clearly offence is a one way street on this forum

There were discussions regarding the use of such terms and as a result decisions were made and action has been taken against use of such words/names/terms since that occasion. Any future uses of such terms will be similarly actioned.

Hold the bus. The Rangers thread was allowed to run for months with bigotry and all sorts. There are some here who are guilty of throwing bricks at glass houses!!!
