It's a very strange sport!

Great topic and bang on the money. I have recently started leaving clubs out as I have been injured and don't want to carry them all. Playing an 8 iron anywhere from 150 to 60 yards out really helps your ball striking and distance control. It's absolutely right this theory. Get the feel for 4 or 5 clubs insted of 14 andyou'll see your scores tumble.

Right on!

I say try it properly for 10 rounds and you'll never go back to 14

Cracking read this thread! Welcome Patrick!

In response to the 14 club pro scenario. I'd say they need all 14 clubs as they expect to hit every green on or under regulation no matter where their tee shot has put them. I don't deny they will have favourite clubs though and that they are great at plotting around the cours to use them

I agree 100%

Unfortunately my bed beckons, My first lesson is at 8 tomorrow morning and its midnight here. That gives me 6 and a half hours sleep.

Goodnight all, I'll be back tomorrow after Murray loses to Federa.

Where's your courtesy - I think some people look out for people making their first post just so they can have a go at them from their lofty position of having made a few thousand posts. Give it a break.

I've made less that 500 so no lofty position for me then.

Each to their own. I've tried many variations and have ended up with 7 clubs in my bag. I speak from many years of experience doing this and I play my lowest rounds with this amount.

So are you saying that if I dropped 6 of my clubs, and had 3 different swings I'd hit the all better because to me, learning to hit my 7i the same as my 8i or 9i seems to be more complicted and I don't see how that would make it any easier.

If you're talking about beginner's or kids and teaching them them to hit different shots with each club then I can see where you're coming from. Most amateurs however aren't beginners and aren't going to improve just by dropping half their clubs.

It's interesting theory you have and it clearly works for you and your daughter who I assume you taught in this way. I'm pretty sure if I only ever had 6 clubs I'd have learnt to get round with those 6 clubs but whther it would make me a better player is doubtful.

I too have many years of experience, I'm clearly not as good as you but i doubt that as anything to do with the number of clubs.

I completely understand your point but I believe this has to be tried before you can pass comment. I'll bet you haven't given it a go.

My experience of this disputes and confirms this fact.

My daughter plays with 9 clubs, I'm still working on her.

On a personal level, I know the game is easier with 7 clubs and I stated the reasons in the OP

BTW Thanks for you well thought out feedback

Think I read a book on this concept a while ago and tbh it does make sense. I keep meaning to play a round with just my hybrid, 7i, wedge and putter but never got round to doing it.

I carry more than 7 clubs coz I can. I see little point of adding in another variable, e.g. hitting a 3/4 driver coz the 3 wood is in the locker, when I can hit the right club for the distance.

But I'm only 53 yrs old and have only been a single figure golfer since 1975.

That said, if it works for you, go for it.

Welcome to the madhouse.

Quite enjoy going out for a few holes in the evening with only 6 or 7 clubs in the pencil bag, means I hit a few different shots to normal in some spots. That said in a comp, much rather have the full bag and full set of options.

One big area where we disagree is you assume that people hit Driver off every par 4/5 tee, I know I certainly dont and most of the long end of my bag are for different options off the tee as much as anything, allowing for good course management rather than just hitting driver every time

I agree with your tactics and tried to suggest an average for each shot. I should have said 14% of tee shots are with woods.

I once thought more clubs was an advantage but have found the opposite to be true. BTW, I find a three quarter driver easier to control than a full 3 wood.

There was an article in one of the magazines i was reading about playing a round with just a hybrid , a 7 iron and a putter , all the people in the group who tried it seemed to have a good time , however im sure they all didnt play to their handicap , thought it seemed like a good experiment though
