I'm Scottish and have been teaching golf for 15 years in Ireland, Austria and Germany. I'm 54, my daughter plays off 4, I used to play off 1, now about 4, too many teaching thoughts in my head I'm afraid, and not enough time playing or practice.

I love the game and enjoy a good, slightly heated argument about any topic whether its about golf, sport or sexual abuse... just kidding.

What's your view on the size of the hole? Too small, too big, about right?

I've never played with a half set, although I do only ave 13 clubs and I use all of them every round.

Is this a ritual thing or do you really need all 13 every round?

It's a fair point you make, you often hear th pro's say they only had one club as a kid and learnt to hit different shots with them. However, they all end up with 14, there must be a reason for that?

I think the fact that they have put in 6 hours per day practice with them for the last 10 - 20 years has earned them the right to expect averages higher that the two from ten that amateurs can expect.

I coach this game for my sins and often teach total beginner how to play the game. When I play with them, I only carry my 9 iron and can play around bogey golf with it. .

18 over par! Or are you referring to the old terminology for par?

Why do you play with students and only carry a 9 iron? Is it to show off or make a good point?

But surely by your argument, if thy had that much time to practice with 6 clubs, they wouldn't need the other 8?

You see for me I have time to practice my swing and I rely on the loft of the club to alter the yardage. I don't have time to work on different swings with different clubs to get the same result. The pro's on the other hand have the time and skill to work on whatever shot they want

I once read an article about an experiment in the states where they had two holes on every green. A white flag for Class 1 - 3 golfers (18.3 handicappers and better) and a Blue flag for the higher handicappers. The white flag had the normal 4 and a bit inch hole and the blue flag had one twice as big.

The high handicappers liked the big hole so much they deliberately threw away shots when they were playing well so that they could remain in the blue flag category. The golfers in the high end of class 3 also gladly slipped to the blue flag category and the experiment was dropped because the level of handicap dropped considerably.

I take it that was the hole you were talking about?

It's mainly because It's easier to demonstrate their miostakes when I don't have a bag on my back and also that a consistent 130 yd shot will get you to handicap 18 quite quickly.

It's my pet subject at the moment but to answer your question in a nutshell...

There isn't much difference between the two. OBFL refer to clubface relative to swing path and NBFL refer to clubface relative to target.

It's not that I don't have time for newbies as we were all newbies once. What I don't have time for is bad manners. I couldn't give 2 hoots what you do, who you are, who you think you are, I just expect someone who is new to introduce themselves. Yes your right most people don't bother reading the intros page so when I start at a new site I like to say hello in my first post. Manners cost nothing but mean everything.

Each to their own. I've tried many variations and have ended up with 7 clubs in my bag. I speak from many years of experience doing this and I play my lowest rounds with this amount.

Great topic and bang on the money. I have recently started leaving clubs out as I have been injured and don't want to carry them all. Playing an 8 iron anywhere from 150 to 60 yards out really helps your ball striking and distance control. It's absolutely right this theory. Get the feel for 4 or 5 clubs insted of 14 andyou'll see your scores tumble.
