Is Tiger REALLY 'the greatest player who has ever played the game'?

I don't think its time for Tiger to stand down maybe its time for the others to step up and try and take it - Tiger didn't play for over 6 months and didn't loose no 1 thats how good he is.

2 - Tiger - 14 - (Can he win into his 40s?)

He won't need to. Once he's beaten Jack's record he'll retire. There won't be a purpose to his golf anymore so he'll stop. And Tiger's record will stand and stand. Can't see anyone else getting close to it.

I disagree and agree with you.

When and if he breaks Jack's record and I think he will, he'll continue to play.

His goal has never been just to rewrite the records books, it was to be a great golfer, and his standard was the records of the greatest golfer, Jack.

He's systematically rewritten the record books and once he gets past Jack's he'll target Sam Sneads. Sam won in 1936 and 1965. That's a 30 year period - to equal that Tiger would have to win in 2025 and he won't qualify for the Champions tour until 2026! Sam only stopped winning regularly when his putting went to down the toilet. I just can't see that happening with Tiger, so a target of 30 majors and way over 100 PGA wins does not seem out of the question.

Will he wins this week? He's currently 9/5, daft odds for a golf major.

Is the number of wins a good enough indicator of who is the greater? should it not also include the number of matches played? then again over what period do you calculate - how about from the first to the last major and then count all matches played in that period, but do you then count only wins or top 5?

anyone a bit bored and with time on their hands?

Try and win a U.S. open on one leg.

This is rapidly becoming the biggest myth in sport history. His knee was injured. This does not make his leg totally useless and I know of what I speak.

To listen to the guff about his 'comeback' is just ridiculous. He is playing golf and winning after 9 months off from ACL surgery (iirc). Dallaglio completely spannered his knee (i.e. a kindly Maori spannered it for him) and was back playing international rugby inside 8 months.

Woods won whilst carrying a knee injury. Not even a knee injury that affected his ability to play. He did not win on one leg.

Can we please stop making out he is some kind of superman when the reality is he is, like most golfers, a bit of a pampered pussy? Stick him in a rugby shirt for a year and see how 'hard' he is...

Good golfer - yes.
Iron Man - not in a million

Oh thats right Tiger just had a sore knee, its not like it needed reconstructive surgery and eight months out of the game. Tiger won the US Open carrying a major sports injury one your precious rugby player would have left the feild with.

For Tiger to be at the TOP of the sport and win with an injury is INCREDIBLE. I have a bad wrist and my swing is awful as I can't commit to the shot at all without 'waiting for the pain', I couldn't hit a cows arse with a shovel right now.

Beneath contempt for such a facecious response. I can only assume you have no experience of a physical sport.

Did he squirt some fake blood on his injury then?? :D ;)

Nice ;)

This is still one of the more bizarre things I've seen in a game. You have to wonder how long it will be before nancy footballers start using this to further simulate head-butting...

Trust me, you can play with a knee injury, even a biggish one (and ACL damage isn't that big a deal anymore, certainly not the Steve Austin measure that freddiewrong seems to think it is). Yes, it'll be sore as hell but it won't interfere the way a wrist injury will.

Playing football/rugby or anything similar you can play BADLY and it not make a difference as it is a TEAM sport.

I don't see footballers playing. even if they've had a little knock, in fact they only run around for about an hour before being sub'ed back to the bench - hardly a comparison to being at the top of your sport and not having a team playing on your behalf and still winning. :D

It's this kind of mentality from golfers that makes people think that golf isn't really a 'proper sport'. To show such ignorance of other sports is never going to help golf with things like Olympic status.

Surely the thing about an injury, any injury, to a world class sportsman playing their sport is that it will detract from their performance.

I can manage to play a round of golf with lots of niggling injuries and they may well reduce my performance by 10% or more, the thing is, who would know? including myself?

Reduce by 1% the performance or capability of someone or something that is operating on a higher level and it is immediately evident. My car 5% less power and performance (say by switching the A/C on) and I can't even tell - 5% less for an F1 driver and they qualify at the back of the grid!

TW's achievement with that injury was imo nothing short of remarkable!

As for who is the greatest of all time, impossible to say, in any sport, when comparing players across different era's, there are simply too many factors and differences to compute.

Makes for great discussion though! :)

Don't be silly now. YOU are the one who brought up the RUGBY comparison :D..

"put him in a rugby shirt...."

I know... let's stick him in Speedo's and see if he can swim instead :D :D :D

Lets stick rocket up his bum and see if he can fly.

Not going to happen either.

I think that given the injury he had, to go through an 18 hole play off, against a fully fit competitor, and still win is nothing short of amazing. There is no way I would do that.

Getting back to the thread....

Tiger is good, very good, and entertaining. He may well be the best at the moment, and he may break some records, but I think there are better players coming up behind him.

Woods won whilst carrying a knee injury.

Didn't he also have stress fractures in the same leg?
Seem to remember this and if I'm right then I suggest anyone who thinks that it was "heroic" in the sporting sense should try and do it themselves.
