Is Tiger REALLY 'the greatest player who has ever played the game'?

Yes and no because years ago they didnt have aqll the technology in clubs and balls that they have now imagine tiger using clubs form years ago he would not be as good at all. Dont get me wrong hes amazing.

Not yet he's not.

x2

Big Jack is still the best in my book. But his career is finished.

We can only properly judge Tiger when we know what he's achieved.

He probably WILL BE the best. But he's not proven it yet.

And eventually someone else will appear and be better than him.

But let's take it one step at a time.

If you mean greatest because he wins more then he should make it, but i think Jack is a better player, in fact i think that TW might not even make it into the top 5 of all time.

sorry i should have made it clearer these are Ewan Murrays words not mine - even Howard Clarke didnt neccasarily agree with Ewan.

Wow.

I can understand if you're talking about being a great role model. And I'm definately not always a fan of his antics.

But not in the top 5 best ever ?

Nah , no way, nada. He's done what all great players do, and that's up the ante. He's terrified the rest of the game for over a decade.

I haven't got the stats to back it up, but I can't believe there has been anyone that has ever dominated the sport so completely for such a long period, when the rest of the players are so comparatively competitive.

Historically the greats are normally Hagan, Hogan, Palmer, Nicklaus. Add a few extras as you wish.

I'd put Tiger at 2nd at the moment, with the expectation of being no.1 some time in the future, although you can put Hogan anywhere you like in the list without too much argument from me.

As someone once said :

"The one thing of which I'm certain is that Jack remains the standard. I think what we all remember about Jack is that he's not only the greatest player of all time, but he's a true champion on and off the course"

That someone ?

A certain TW. When he remembers those words I think he'll step up to the plate as a truly great player. maybe the best of all time.

Yeh, In my book he's the greatest ever by a long way. No-one else even comes close.

I would concur with this. TW is well ahead of anyone else. Jack was great but he didn't have the shots Tiger has. All you might argue is that Jack was a better driver of the ball, all other departments TW is better.

I read that as suggesting that Jack is the greatest.

TW is well ahead of everyone, NOW. Jack was the greatest putter, greatest driver, greatest gameplayer, greatest gentleman, greatest golfer.

Like I say, TW will probably be the best, especially if he becomes more stable mentally. But only history can say that. Until then, the mantle is Jack's.

Re: Is Tiger REALLY 'the greatest player who has ever played the game'

For my money:
He is an odious individual, the surliness when he cocks his drives up is one thing, his surliness when an approach shot goes 60 feet away from the pin as opposed his 'divine right' to hit them inside 10 feet is another.
His spitting
His lack of respect for others
His attitude to the media (who have build his aura and fortune)

On the other hand
his actual play is often sublime.

But the best ever, as i never saw say Sir Henry Cotton play, nor Arnold Palmer in his pomp for that matter, its impossible to say.

A bit like saying who was better Best or Maradonan, Dean or Ferguson, Morecambe or Reeves

Short answer, 'no' with a 'but'.

Long answer, 'no' with a 'and why'.

Greatest pitch 'n' putter no doubt. We'll see just how good when the grooves change.

Yes he is, Pro golf is on a different level now compared to the 60/70/80's he is the greatest athlete the game has seen, no has ever got close to the level he is at and has been at for 10 yrs.

IMO golf is the greatest sport and Tiger is the greatest sportsman of all time.

He has a history of winning on courses that do not punish the wayward tee shots, which given the next four Majors are Hazeltine, Augusta, Pebble Beach and St Andrews, will probably mean he adds to his tally over the next 12.

And if/when he wins a Major when not leading on the final day, then I might start believing some of the hype.

Tom Watson blows some of the above right out the water. Oh, are we not forgetting Tiger made a pigs ear of the open....it was just a wee while back, not the 60/70 or 80s. Now where did he finish, let me see now. :p

I stand by it, I agree Tom did amazingly well at the open but fell short and Tiger had a bad open, he has had a bad year (only won 5 of 12 events with 10 top 10's )but then he has just come back from major reconstructive surgery on his knee.

Tigers win rate over the last 4 seasons on the PGA tour is just under 49% (24 of 49 )that is crazy good.

Hmmmmmmmm, all those wins @ Firestone on tree lined 20yd wide fairways don't really support that one.
