Is Tiger REALLY 'the greatest player who has ever played the game'?

What about Torrey pines, Valhalla, Medinah and Bethpage Black are they easy and how you can call Pebble beach an easy driving course is beyond me. It easy to come up with theory's when you don't have to back them up.

Re: Is Tiger REALLY 'the greatest player who has ever played the game'

So where does Poulter fit into this. If tiger or Jack is first and second, Poults must be third then?

Poulter??? he isnt even the 3rd best 'character' on tour....

Re: Tiger REALLY 'the greatest player

Without question Tiger Woods is the best player that ever picked up a set of clubs.

So good infact that I thought I'd say it twice :D :D

The answer to the OP is no I'm afraid. Until he gets number 19, then he is the 2nd best player of all time.
He's way down the list of great golfers.
To hear Howard Clarke last night describe Tiger's 3rd into 16 as "The greatest shot I've ever seen in my life" is just simply embarrassing as well.
I'm not saying it wasn't great, but it's another indicator of the fawning media over everything he does. I've seen at least 10 shots this year that were better than it.

Lets see if Tiger, when he's 46, can win the masters with a back nine of 30 shots. Big Jack is the greatest until Tiger is 46.

Funny criteria to use??!! Sam Snead was nearly 53 when he won a PGA tour event does that make him better than Jack & Tiger?

Hmmmmmmmm, all those wins @ Firestone on tree lined 20yd wide fairways don't really support that one.

Would that be those lovely spaced trees and so-called rough that made the areas considerably more than 20yds wide?

Look at the backspin Harrington got from the 'rough' on 15 - ridiculous.

Yes, of course he's great. He's just not (and never will be) the greatest.

What is the difference between a "player" and a "golfer" then?? We may all be arguing about different criteria at the moment.

As Bobmac has raised the question........I think Tiger is the best Player currently and is likely to surpass previous or current records, but he is not the best golfer, not even in the top 20 in that respect.
For best golfers you should look in the direction of Big Jack/Seve/Tom Watson/Shark/Couples/Big easy/....and many many more.

Tiger has all the skill and commitment, but gives up too easily when things are not going his way, has bouts of bad behavior, can be ignorant and makes excuses after a bad days play. This doesnt mean I dont like him or respect his ability, but over recent years Ive gone off the golfer, but remained in awe of his abilities.

He still has records to beat, I hope he matures into a great golfer, because he isn't very mature sometimes.

His golf ability is not in question, best player in the world he is, best golfer the world has seen, he isn't!

best of the current generation - yes, at the moment

best ever, how can you compare? How would Old Tom, Young Tom, Hogan, Nicklaus, Palmer and all those others have done on modern courses with modern equipment? How would Tiger have fared in their days? Even the number of wins can't tell you that; how many events were there for them, and could they have travelled as easily as now?

as easy to ask who was the better driver Fangio or Schumacher?

no doubt after Tiger someone will come and move it on again hopefully it will be my Son and I will be able to buy Turnberry and retire happy but who knows.

Too bad... it'll be MY son! :D

However, I'll let you play Turnberry for reduced fees :p

Like anything this just comes down to opinion there in no difinative way of telling, all we can agree on (i think, I hope) is that it is between Jack and Tiger.

IMO they both moved our game on to the next level and no doubt after Tiger someone will come and move it on again hopefully it will be my Son and I will be able to buy Turnberry and retire happy but who knows.

What is this based on he has a win record of 49% and something like 90% 10 from 12 top tens where is the giving up.

Certainly the best golfer of his generation but not the best of all time in my estimation until he beats Jack's record. As for the greatest player, taking into account conduct, adoration from the public, putting stuff back into the game then I'd say his there int he top5 but let down purely by his well documented on course antics. We were subjected to more flying clubs and spitting last night and after watching his opening barrage in awe, does leave a sour taste in the mouth.

I think as players, Nicklaus, Watson, Palmer, certainly surpass him but as a golfer he is a genius who will surely become the greatest ever.
