Walked into a golf retailer earlier on today (Not AG but one that normally wins retailer of the year) looking for a new hybrid. I tried a couple Mizuno JPX800 and an Adams model (can't remember exactly). The Mizuno had £99 on the sticker and I hit it really well so I took it to the bloke at the till.
"The headcover is £5 extra by the way, but that gives you an extra years guarantee" says the assistant.
"So if I dont buy the headcover I dont get the extra years guarantee"
"Thats correct"

Is this normal? I have never been charged extra for a headcover before. Seems wrong to me. I didn't buy the club by the way.

I take it you mean direct golf then because that is the only place that's ever charged me for a headcover when I got a putter from there. I also bought a 3 wood from there and they tried to charge for the headcover. I told them I wouldn't be buying the club if they charged me so they gave me it for free.

I've never bought any kind or wood or putter (clubs that I would expect to come with a head cover) and been charged extra for said cover. So, it does seem a little strange to me.

Made you walk out too so I expect it may not be a policy in place for long if the majority of punters do the same!

C'mon - name and shame them!!

I have only had one store from one company try and charge me for a headcover in that way and that was Direct Golf in Lincoln. All the other DG stores were fine.

I've never heard so much bo***cks in my life!

Pay extra for the head cover????

Never - I would tell them to poke it!

Chris

Stupid thing is if the ticket had said £105 I would have brought it but its the principle.

Cutting off my nose to spite my face maybe but I can be a stroppy git.

For the original poster-http://www.clubhousegolf.co.uk/acatalog/Mizuno_MX-700_Rescue_Hybrids.html

it's pretty much the same hybrid just last years model for a great price

This was a few years ago when DG Lincoln tried that on me. Also when I wanted to try the club I was told that I would have to pay £4 for a bucket of ballsif I wanted to have a hit. Never been back since despite it being nearer than DG Cambridge which I have used frequently

DG always charge extra for the headcover in store, as the OP said, it apparently covers the club for an extra year.
I paid it once for a driver but felt aggrieved having to pay it. (the club was at a bargain price)

However, when I bought an Odyssey putter in the same shop a year later, I got it for the online price and told them I was an online member so they agreed to throw the cover in gratis. Well chuffed.

Unless I'm mistaken most clubs come with a years guarantee and so if you have the receipt and there is an issue you should be able to get it shipped back to the manufacturer via the shop during that time if there is an issue. If someone tried to charge me for a headcover after offering to part with nearly £100 for a club I'd put it on the counter and leave. Never been charged for a cover and would never pay for it.

Never in my life have I been asked to buy a head cover and if I did I wouldn't buy the club, that's taking the p1sh in my opinion. Especially when they probably give the head cover for free online.

I'm sure mizuno don't charge them extra for the headcover so maybe try contacting mizuno over here and let them know that a company is trying to charge you for something that comes with the club as standard.
