I have been building social networking sites for a while for the NHS etc and some new technology has come along that I would like to try out.

So I have decided to build a golfing website. Should I just do it for kicks? or is there some functionality lacking that people would use? that’s not out there I'm thinking the usual handicap tracker, reviews, forum, Events, competition builder, Friends league, For sale listings, Rate my swing.

It will probably not see the light of day, tell me what you think that would be good to have or if I should bother.

Why not just have more input into this site, it has a massive following is well moderated, and I'm sure if you offer to build on it for them it would be appreciated.

But personally I thinks its a touch cheeky to come on one site, and hint at becoming its competitor. But maybe thats whats needed to keep things fresh and improving constantly.

Sorry not trying to be cheeky, I would love to build something for an existing site like this but it comes down to technology I build stuff in .net this sites PHP and all I really want out of this is to learn the new tech (MVC) I know enough of the acronyms.

But if I can build something that people could use it gives me more incentive to build it.

That's cool look like no one is interested anyway so I will just do it for fun.

I know what you are thinking Robster.

I had the same idea. I wanted to have a dabble in website type stuff too. It was a case of deciding what to base it on. Sure, there are lots of golf websites and forums out there. I still maintain GM is by far and large the best out there.
I don't have the technical ability to build an all singing all dancing site and I certainly didn't wish to tread on anyones toes by attempting to take on GM. That's why I went local.
I knew it wouldn't attract countrywide attention but thought it might get a bit of local interest (countywide) I launched the forum late November last year. Brendy kindly allowed me one or two plugs on here after I asked permission. It started slow at first but seems to be growing steadily as word gets round about it. A couple of weeks ago I launched an accompanying website relating to local courses and news which has been pretty well received.

I remember GM from the old days. A small site with a hardcore of forum members. Look at it now! Must be one of the busiest forums on the net.

My advice would be to not try and compete against the big boys, they have the money and the following as well as lots of backroom staff to outdo anyone.
I'm happy with mine at the moment and I hope my members are too. I think it will get bigger, hopefully quite a bit bigger but still maintain a familiar and friendly face. It's quite unique to Yorkshire golfers but doesn't suggest it's any bigger than that.

PS. A couple of links in my signature will show you what I mean.
PPS. Any Yorkshire golfers who haven't seen it, take a look and join in! Sorry Brendy but it was a tasteful and related plug matey!!! ;)
