Seeing a lot of posts on hybrids and woods and the fact that a lot of people are ditching the 4 iron or saying they cant hit it or that they are not confident with it.....

If things keep going are we going to see more half and half sets between hybrids and irons without woods and long irons in peoples bags.....

What is it about long irons that make some average Joe's dump them or shy away from them....

I would think that most are similar to me in that their Favorite iron in the bag maybe their 7 iron...Its probably the first iron ill pull after warming up with the wedges but after the 7 iron ill hit heaps of 4's.....

Im not comparing people to me hitting the 4 iron but i would wonder that if it was practiced with more on a regular basis then maybe the 4 hybrid would be left out of the bag......
There have been instances where iv pulled a 4 iron out of my bag instead of my 20 degree hybrid in the cut rough even when the ball is sitting down a little as im more confident with the iron cutting through the bad lie.....

I dont think that i will ever get rid of the 4 iron..I carry my 4 iron 165 mtrs (about 180 yards)..I think that they are more accurate than a hybrid of the same loft....Ok maybe a little shorter in length but im not sure thats a better trade off for accuracy....

I actually prefer hitting long irons to hybrids.

There's just something s little bit more special when you pure a long iron that you just don't get from a hybrid IMHO.

Yikes! My 3 iron is a permanent fixture in the bag and the 1 iron still gets a trip out in the wind.

Personal preference of course but I reckon if you can hit a 3 wood off of the deck and a wedge, then you can hit all in between! Just needs a bit of confidence building.

4i is pretty much my club off the tee. Unless it's a particularly wide fairway with a fairly forgiving right side (for the power slice) I'm leaving the driver in the bag lately. Mind, had some good experience gripping down on the driver tonight so may have to work on that.

I wonder whether people are less confident with their 4i for a similar reason. Normally they are longer than the 7i, and perhaps that extra inch or so of shaft length throws people's swings off enough that they feel they should ditch the club.

Depends how physically competitive I remain... if it gets to the stage that a hydrid is reqired for the distance then so be it.

4i is staying but the 3i hasn't featured for a while as I'm hitting the 7 wood I was given really well and more consistantly. Love my 4i for punch shots under the trees when I'm off line on a couple of holes and I hit it really sweetly on a full shot.

Like a lot of others who have responded, 3 or 4 iron is my go to club when my driver is playing up. I'll admit though that after a few years of barely playing I am struggling badly with 3 wood and 2 iron to the point where I had my first ever hit with a hybrid a couple of weeks ago and may have to bring one into the bag in replacement of the 2 iron to give an extra option. I have lost all confidence with 3 wood off the deck which means that all long second shots are 3 or 4 iron which have become one of the strongest parts of my game.

I can play so many different shots with my woods/hybrid.
Just never the one I'm wanting at the time?

4i was retired from my bag over a year ago. 4H simply more consistent and better from rough. I try and avoid trees, but can do the low shot from them with it too.

For me it has nothing to do with not being able to hit it - provided I have a good lie. But out of 2-3" rough there was no point. A 4h is so much more versatile and allows me to go for greens from rough I couldn't even dream of going for with a 4i.

My 4h is also great from dodgy lies around the greens

A main requirement in my new setup was a 4 iron as we have a lot of dog legs on our course that a good 4 iron shot can get you in a good position for. I have replaced my old 5 wood with a 19* hybrid, but will use that as a in between 5w and 3i

Well the 4 Iron is staying in my bag. I might not always get the distance but it stays straight. Replaced my 3i with a hybrid years ago.
Could never hit that bloody club !
