Is spelling and grammar important to you?

My typing is appalling, and even though i am an "east end boy" i do spend a lot of time trying to get punctuation and spelling correct. But i dont get too paranoid about it - the most important thing to me is communication is not misunderstood.

What reaaalllllly gets me, is pronunciation with kids. How on earth can kids learn to spell a word correctly if it isn't pronounced correctly ? Then they get all the grief of getting of getting their school tests wrong and being told they can't spell when in fact they spell extremely well for what they hear.

Sorry, personal rant over

I'm sorry but at the end of the day its a golf forum. As long as I can read the content without it being one long unpunctuated paragraph I am more than happy to let spelling mistakes and grammar go. I'm not being lazy but why be a pedant. Its about discussing (mostly) golf related issues. I do a fair bit of writing and for newer members use to edit the GM Forum pages that appear in the magazine each month as well as having had a number of articles published. When submitting that kind of work, personal pride dictates that I'll read and re-read it and check it for grammar and spelling.

On here I'd rather make my point on a particular thread and move on. Life's too short and if I wanted to be tested on my English I'd join the "Eat Shoots and Leaves" appreciation society

Simple question .....

To the people that do point out the errors and spelling mistakes....

What do you get out of it / achieve??

(I am no including the very clever people that spot the mistakes from the smart a$$ who originally pointed out a mistake, to you lot its a big )

Oh sucks I meant to include the quote [referring]to there and not their in Pierce's post. Hoisted by his own petard:whistle:

I reckon most misspelling is generated by the tablet/phone users.

Text speak Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Anyhow Have a good year everyone.

Fixed that for you Daymond!

Yes in my work reports etc and when it comes to my daughters school work, but on here it really does not bother me, I will always check my own posts and sometimes I will skip a post if it is to bad, but that is rare!

Not wishing to sound like a snob, but spelling and grammar were what I went to school for. What's the point in learning how to write and spell properly if you are not going to use it.
Some posts on here are a nightmare to read. Poor grammar and the worst, bloody text speak.

On the whole, as long as I can read and understand a post, I'm not too bothered. Always try to reply correctly though.

pot kettle black..........if you really like people to take pride in their grammar and spelling then maybe you should try it yourself:rolleyes:

Is that 1-0 to us thick planks Wull?

Yes, spelling and grammar are important to me.

I don't criticise others for being thick though.

Spell checkers are fine as long as they are set to English rather than American!

Grammar checkers just leave me even more confused than I am about the point of grammar in the first place...
