Is spelling and grammar important to you?

Simple question .....

To the people that do point out the errors and spelling mistakes....

What do you get out of it / achieve??

(I am no including the very clever people that spot the mistakes from the smart a$$ who originally pointed out a mistake, to you lot its a big )

I only correct spelling mistakes if it's a post from Smiffy.
After all, he started it.

I can accept that bob

But the rest.......

I made a point in my first post to this forum of apologising in advance for my poor grasp of English language/grammar... I was never the brightest of sparks in my schooling days and over achieved somewhat in obtaining an O level in English... Since leaving school [40+ years ago] I've earnt my crust with my hands rather than my brain. So my understanding of something I struggled with in the first place has only got worse...

So I tend not to get too fussed with poor grammar from others...

As for text speak... I can't be asked and tend to skip posts where text speak has been used...

Oh sucks I meant to include the quote refering to there and not their in Pierce's post. Hoisted by his own petard:whistle:

I reckon most misspelling is generated by the tablet/phone users.

Text speak Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Anyhow Have a good year everyone.

Grammar and spelling are very important and in all honesty there is no reason for people to make constant mistakes, especially when there's a spell checker tool on the computer.

I do believe a lot of it is just laziness and because of how text messaging is so popular, lots of people carry on their text speak into forums, emails etc.

Some people seem to get off on picking out mistakes in posts. That gets on my goat more than any poor spelling, WAY more!

Agree 100%.

I don't know anyone's circumstances and, as a post in the Lounge proved, you could easily come across as an utter tool if you get pompous about it.

Personally speaking I think good spelling and grammar are important. For god's sake it is our language, the laziness in using it is yet another reason our nation is seen as a bit of a joke around Europe. I feel it's something people should take just a little more pride in

I fully understand the difficulties experienced by the true dyslexia sufferer, unfortunately a huge amount of people claim to be dyslexic when they are not. The claims by many that 'I was rubbish at spelling at school' are frankly pathetic; are they saying that they are absolved of any responsibility for learning or personal development once they leave school?

There are people on here who feel that finding the correct shoes is a lot more important than being able to use their mother tongue correctly.

Are they important to me? Absolutely!
In my profession spelling and grammar can be not just important, but crucial. It can be, literally, the difference between life and death for the user of the equipment. As such, it is as important to couch what you write to the correct level for the intended reader. It is no use writing a university treatise and hoping a, sometimes, poorly educated, non-native English speaker will understand it; something that I continually have to re-emphasize to design engineers.

I try not to carry it over into 'my life' but I find it almost impossible not to identify errors in printed text, eg newspapers, advertisements and magazines.

If I find posts that are too difficult to comprehend, the worst being through want of some simple punctuation, then I just don't bother. Poor spelling and grammar I can tolerate - mostly, text-speak - no thank you.

It is very important to me and I carefully type and check spelling etc at all times. Grammar feels a little less important but again I try to be correct as much as possible.

Would I correct someone on here for using poor grammar or mis-spelling? No.

Do I care what Johnny foreigner thinks of us whilst they are at our front door, cap in hand, looking for us to bail them out! Because of their laziness in managing their economies!

I take it you don't read The Guardian then, you would be there all day.

You don't have to justify yourself to anyone buddy. Some people will have more money than you, others will be better educated than you, however NO ONE is a better person than you! They may think they are but they're not!

Get stuck into the forum and ignore the pompous fools who like to belittle you!
