Is it cheating?

If you are not playing any qualifiers for fear of being cut to help you win a KO then you are manipulating your HC which could result in it being suspended - it’s a form of cheating

I haven't read the posts between this one and the 5th page - for which I apologise in advance.

However, this post covers the important aspects perfectly; so I'm amazed there are another 4 pages!

A simple test is to ask yourself how you’d feel if you turned up to a matchplay final and your opponent was in the same situation.

Say their handicap is 28 but they play to the standard of a 5 handicapper and give you a total shoeing.

It’s easy to see this makes a mockery of the handicap system.

Definitely against the spirit of the game, etiquette and rules. As others have said, the fact you’re asking the question means that in your own mind/conscience you know what you are doing is wrong.

I had a playing partner at my old club that did this one winter. He’d played really well in the first couple of rounds of a winter stableford (cumulative points over 6 rounds) so decided not to play any qualifiers (medals) to preserve his handicap. I told him he was wrong, but he’d trot out excuses such as family commitments to justify his actions.

What made it worse is that as he often used the same excuse to avoid stopping for a drink after the round, I ended up getting all the grief off other members who’d worked out what he was up to.

Can't add anymore than what's already been said on the matter. I do suspect, as others have said, that he's fishing.

A guy at my work now refuses to play in our work tournaments because he was cut after posting scores of 38, 39 and 40+ scores. Baffles me.

The post is probably a wind-up. But we all know this kind of thing goes on.
IMO this is the fault of CONGU. To allow an active handicap based on 3 cards a year is way too low.

Ultimately your handicap will get chopped based on matchplay results.

However, the system is not quick enough to take this into account until after the end of the season.

It is not cheating, as long as you have a valid handicap and have played sufficient counters in the season. It is simply using the rules to your advantage.

The number of cards is totally irrelevant, if people are going to manipulate their handicap it doesn't make any difference whether you hand in 3 or 30 cards.

How can it?

The handicap secretary can take overall results into account and chop you, even if you haven't scored in medal rounds.

I went down from 23 to 17 a few years ago over the close season. This was based on winning the handicap matchplay and getting to a final of another KO comp.

I had been playing plenty of medals, but just couldn't get a score together and was obviously using my shots effectively in the matchplay comps when you don't need to worry about a bad hole, and simply move to the next tee.

Keeping your handicap high deliberately, to improve chances of winning something is cheating.

Avoiding increases by playing less isnt quite the same......Although anyone "ballotted out" because of it might disagree!........But, if you want a "Vanity Handicap" fine, lets play for more money!

Club Handicap Committee deciding theyve had enough of you winning matchplay events and not showing up for medals!
I don't think it's quite as straightforward as that, having seen just that scenario in the last year (obviously not me being the party concerned)

The operative word is "eventually".

In the meantime the people involved may have won a few matchplay finals, won a race to Dubai and many opens before it all catches up with them.
