Iron distances...

Some posts on here have had me thinking that to hit my 7i further I simply take my 6i and a thick black marker pen - make a score out across the 6i and write 7i on the sole. And all of a sudden I am hitting my 7i 10-15yds further - genius - and it's free.

Or am I missing something...? ;)

the m2 7 iron is the same loft as my ap2 5 iron

The more you think about it one length would work for everyone, 7 irons a 6/5 iron loft with shorter shaft I hit mine 160y about 13y per club

As said its not how far more control

You are right. The bottom line is, it doesn't matter how your 7 iron distance compares to someone else's - it only matters that you know how far you hit with each club.

And the truth is that on holes such as our 168yd Par 3 13th - if the flag is towards the front and there isn't a wind - some days I will feel like hitting a firm 7i in - other days I just fancy hitting an easier 6i - just depends how I feel - no particular golfing mechanics or shot trajectory or characteristics rhyme or reason - just feel.

Yeah. For me that would be which one do I have a better chance off actually hitting properly on the day!

Yes that is exactly what most manufacturers do in reality.

T'is all very well taking the next club down/up 'whichever way you look at it' but there comes a point at which you run out of taking the next club option which is where I found myself, up until today that is !...

I got drafted in to play in a 'Palladium day' at our club today as they were short of players (got a free day off work n'all) so with the knowledge that I'm possibly facing a right drumming I borrowed a set of 'wilsonfatshafts' (tried to say that as fast as I could) off of a work colleague just for the occasion and the difference was instant 'ok' it took me a wee while to get my distances keyed in but as soon as I'd figured them out I was off...

Took a 7i off of our 185yd-10th tee and one bounce saw it roll out on the green so I'm reckoning a good 170 off the tee and as sweet a strike as I've ever had...

I was chatting to one of my team members about this and that and as we were approaching the 10th tee he said so 'what's the crack here then' to which I replied "7i dropped short of the left bunker, bounce down into the hollow on the left and roll out onto the green" and I'm beggered if I didn't nail it to a T, well happy...

Now all I've gotta do is persuade me work mate to sell'm to me... :smirk:

Anyone else find it odd when people have sets of these jacked up lofts then moan that they don't carry 3 or 4 irons as they can't hit them...you already are! I'd love to see the lofts on a jacked up 3i..must play more like a 1i,No wonder some guys can't hit them.

The 'Fatties' contain 4-SW and there's a 1i to go with'm, should be interesting to see how that little beaut flies, gonna try it on the practice ground first though...

the lofts are less aggressive at the low end. just 2.5 degree between 3 and 4 on the m2s

I only recently found out the exact lofts on my irons (had to email Callaway to get them). Turns out my 5 iron, which I struggle with at times, is 23°. I think most 5 irons are a tough more lofted than that aren't they? Explains a few things. It also means I'll be looking to buy a gap wedge more urgently than before... PW is 44°, SW is 54°.

The 'Fatties' are now mine, done a deal, he wanted my old 3-wood as his has seen better days so job done, now all I've gotta sort out is my wedges as I'm not getting what I want from them, once again 'old skool' and not exactly top end stuff...

On a high note though, I hit my new driver well yesterday, far better than I've hit any driver in a long time...

As others have said, I don't think it matters how far you hit in comparison to others. What matters is making pure connections and hitting it straight. I'd take that any day over hitting it further.

For what it's worth, i hit a full swing 7 iron about 160-165 carry.

Yep, quite agree but as I said in an earlier post 'I was struggling with the transition from 3-wood/hybrid to my irons as everything was a bit of a mishmash of distances, now 'hopefully' with the 'Fatties' I've got a half decent base setting to work from...

I've recently changed my driver and 3-wood for Callaway XR's which I'm hitting very well so that's that area sorted, hopefully with the irons now sorted I can concentrate on getting some form of 'uniformity' with my hybrids but first I need to work on my wedges as once again there's a bit of a mismatch going on...

A while back I had a go with another playing partners 50* wedge (some Japanese thing or other, can't remember the name now) which I hit really well and I'm talking about 90yds or so which surprised the s**t outta me as I can't hit my '50* Tour Edge' anywhere near as far, maybe 60yds or so, anyway that's my plan for the immediate future 'wedges' and I'm gonna treat myself to new ones whilst I'm at it...

My 5 iron has 25 degrees loft :S

My Taylormade MC TP 5i is 26. prob more traditional, probably fair to say the more improvement biased the club the more likely it has jacked lofts. Imagine the pros playing with game improvement irons! Billy Mayfair used to use AP1 Titleists iirc as he wasn't a big hitter.

what I'd like to know 'if you don't mind' is what sort of distances you lot are hitting your 7i, I'm carrying mine about 140/45 which seems a little on the short side in my opinion, especially when my mates are hitting 8's and 9's those sort of distances...

Hello! I'm a high handicapper (fairly new to the game and don't play that regularly). My 7 iron is 32 degrees loft and I tend to hit it 130-140 yards. I wouldn't say that I was a big hitter though!

Yeah, that's about what I was getting, my official handicap is 21 although Personally I think I'm probably more around the 18 mark as the cards I handed in to get my 'hc' were done when I was having issues with getting off the tee's, I've since aquired a new driver and 3-wood (Callaway XR) which seems to have sorted the issue out, still need a little more work but 'hopefully' with the new irons carrying a good chunk further I should be able to start knocking a shot or two off here and there, that's the plan anyway...

Hopefully I'll find out on Wednesday of next week as if all goes to plan I'm playing in the 'mid-week medal' which should be interesting... :mmm:

Welcome along. How well do you hit it? I'd say around 140 is an average distance but it's about how well you hit it and how often you hit the greens from that distance
