Iron Advice for Beginner

I am classed as a beginner (27yrs old 5'9), however, i do know i can hit a ball. As a teenager I played Pitch and Put (Heaton Park) in the summer and more recently i've been down to the driving range a few times and now have one full 18 whole round of golf under my belt.

Now I'm going to purchase my first ever set. I've read a few reports and the Big Bertha 08 seem a popular choice. The new Cobra SZ are also another option, I've read a good report and are cheaper than the BB08.

My comfort zone is around 300-350pounds.

Would be most appreicative of any advice about the Cobras and any other iron sets which I should consider.

(i will head down to the local pro shop but would really like some comments from you guys first)

I think you'll get some opinions and some advice!

In my opinion my advice would be go to a store with a good selection and bash a few and see what you like. Take some advice from a pro, and take it from there.

Otherwise all you'll get is 'X' brand is better than 'Y' brand!?

Find something that you like the look of, and can hit quite well.

No science, no secret 'way', no, buy this that or the other I'm afraid. Not from me.

Just go and enjoy the experiance.

Oh. Just be aware that the big retailers have their 'own' brands, which they might just push you towards.

And don't worry if a 200 quid set feels better than a 300 quid set. Its what works for you that counts. Believe me, you can spend a whole day trying them all!!

I agree. Try as many options (steel and graphite, fully cavity, less cavity etc etc) and get advice of your local pro. Do your homework and hit as amany makes and models as you can and narrow it down. Then see what price you can get it for and go back to the pro and see if he'll price match as its always best to try and give him the business instead of a facelss multi-national like AG.

If you go to AG beware they will try and push, Nicklaus, Yonex, Hogan and Wilson as they represent the biggest profit mark up. Stand your ground and ask to try whatever you think will suit your game.

If I were you I would consider a good second-hand set to start with rather than splash out on new.

My lovely new SZs arrived yesterday but it's peeing down outside and I can't even get chipping in the garden. I will report on them hopefully after my round on Tuesday.

As a BIG bertha 2008 owner i can recommend them. However, that doesn't mean they work for you. Try and get a few lessons and then with the same pro if poss try out a few different types. I would go custom fit if possible, shouldn't cost extra, but with a proper pro so that you don't get a set made for a bad posture and swing. This in mind maybe wait till you have had a few lessons.

If you choose standard maybe go 2nd hand as suggested above. Golfbidder offer some good prices at times.

Try as many as you can and pick the best ones for you. Not the best looking, the best performing.

This game is only 50% physical its also hugely psychological so get a set that feels good and looks good, anything that builds confidence is worth it. For my money mizuno or titleist. But if Di Stewart was coming to interview you, what would you want to be holding in your hands -club that is!

After trying out a few different irons from various pro shops and golf shops I decided on Callaway Big Bertha 06 irons. Purchased from AG i got excellent advice, the staff were very unsales man like....as i always say "in sales sometimes Less Is More"

Going to pick up a Callaway Diablo driver this weekend, Neutral 10 degree. At the moment the 189 pounds plus an Odyssey putter seems a pretty good deal.
