Irish Open 2015

+7 for MciLroy - +5 the cut line.

He is not playing great, nice up and down there for birdie on the 12th.

edit : -2 through 12 is good golf, just meant he is not always hitting it where he is pointing

Always thought from the start of the week his head wasn't in this competition. Very odd interview to give at the start of the week - looking for some incentive to make it worthwhile coming.

I wonder if people underestimate just how hard this course is, especially with 20 mph wind and rain, and playing at 7200 yards. I have played RCD at 6600 and also the TPC Las Colinas where the US PGA Tour event is being held. There are few words which can accurately convey how different they are. The R1 leader at Las Colinas scored 62. The R1 leader at RCD 67. That probably underestimates the difference between them. I bet Rory would have score no worse than 74 or 75 at Las Colinas with the swing he had yesterday at RCD.

RCD is a beast in the wind. I have played it quite a few times, and a few years ago I arranged a game for a +1 handicap mate, who usually played at East Lothian links and was a very handy player in bad weather. He went round in 74 and came off saying he had never seen a harder course and how it was so relentlessly tough. The wind was about 12-15mph that day. A bad day at RCD really blows your score out. Some of us would need to be rescued off the course in conditions like some of these pros played and a few might give up golf.

I am really sorry Rory missed the cut. I think he has invested a lot emotionally in the event and the crowds will miss him, especially the kids.

I think during play this afternoon Ewan said that the record score is 66 - so there you go.

As Ethan says, it's a proper beast, or to say it properly as we do in Norn Irn - "It's a right oul baste so it is!"

Doesn't the course record date back to 1934 ? Not sure many pro comps have been played there since mind you, so hopefully a new record will be set this week.

When we played the course recently, balls were getting blown off the green, and the Pro said they would have called off the players in the Irish Open The greens were lightening quick though, and I think they may be a bit slower this week in case of high winds. haven't noticed them playing off mats either.

Course look absolutely fantastic, and I can't wait to get back there.

It's one of my biggest regrets that I never played golf until I came to live in Eng-er-land, and so never enjoyed the likes of Royal Country Down or Portrush.

Having played RCD you, sir, have one up on me and I'm very jealous.

You still have time despite your great age.

You're right. I just might do it. What were the rough costs for your recent trip?

I'm not long home from RCD. A fantastic day at a great venue.

We were looking after the scoreboards in the media centre and tented village first thing this morning but free to do what we wanted from 10.30am on. The marshals were well looked after and it was very well organised.

I played the Annesley Links a while ago and had seen parts of the championship course intertwined but today was completely different. The course looks unbelievably good, although terrifying for a 17 handicapper like myself. The first thing that really stands out are the greens. Up close its really easy to see why they struggle to keep the ball on the green, anything landing at pace off-centre will either run through into the run offs. The course is bone dry (despite some heavy showers) and combined with the undulations in those greens it's almost impossible to get it close at some holes.

The conditions obviously also add to the difficulty but apart from a heavy downpour at lunch time I didn't think the weather was too bad for links golf today.

We had a decent view of Lowry's birdie 'putt' at the 7th which was the loudest cheer I heard all day. The size of the crowd following McIlroy was ridiculous.

Not sure I can answer that, in case my wife comes on here.

We paid £250 for the golf. 4 rounds at Royal County Down, Portrush, Kirkistown Castle and Ardglass. Went end of April so got winter rates. Great guest house/hotel in Strangford which was about £55 a night B & B (four night)s and two evening meals. Flights and hire cars/petrol worked out at about another £200 each. So about £700 plus food and drink each for six of us.

We pay about the same when we go to St Andrews. For the quality of the golf and accommodation good value. If you are ever interested let me know and I will give you hotel and golf club contacts.
