iPhone GPS allowed!

personally they should be allowed, the compass debate is a load of old tosh, who is gonna stand there, work out direction etc to play a shot by wafting a compass app on a phone? no-one or the odd donut who actually thinks it will benefit them!!

I dont care what folk say regards rules are rules, some are tosh and need to be looked at with a common sense approach not an old fashioned one :)

while it is a rule then abide by it in comps etc, maybe we should petition apple for an update to have the compass app removable, it might be easier/quicker than the powers that be amending the rules :D

Jezz, settle yourself down, dig out the original thread and be prepared for a long haul - two or three bottles should do it. :D

Ah, one of those - I'll dig it out and have a good read when I have the odd hour or two to spare!

Agreed. The rule from the R&A is tosh, but it is the current ruling. The compass is a non argument, but apps do exist to measure windspeed through the mic. They don't work, but that's not the point.

I have an iPhone and would use a GPS app in a comp if it were allowed. I could cheat and use a spirit level app, but I wouldn't, even though the app is available.

I guess it depends on who's got the best lobbyist group, as it's not in Skycaddies et al interests to let smart phones be used as GPS's.

More than that, I think the compass issue is a complete red herring and irrelevant. The rule says that any feature that can help with your shot selection is not allowed. It does not mention a compass specifically as far as I can see and I have never heard anyone ask "is this par 3 playing East or North?" (which is surely public information anyway) and alter their club selection accordingly.

Consquently my take on the rules is that so long as you have no other app that measures gradient or temperature etc then you are fine. If you have a spirit level in your bag but don't use it you are fine too, hence the glaring inconsistency and lack of trust here.

One day they will actually sort this out but no time soon looking at the wording of the R&A statement. Until then this thread will be repeated every few weeks.

Sorry for in some way perpetuating this

I think this ruling from the randa is tosh. You could give most club players every bit of info available from distance, wind speed, gradient, amount of surface water, length of grass, temp of the water in the pond behind the green, colour of the bar maids........eyes and they would still balls the shot up!

On my iPhone I only use my caddie pro app, no compass, no wind speed, no spirit level yet I even though I'm accessing the same info any one with a sky caddy is using my phone is not allowed. The porn on my phone would be more use mid round than the wind speed, it's total ball-axe. Maybe the randa and usga should try and update the rules quicker than once a decade.
