I know this was a sore subject for one or two people the other week but I have an outcome to my appeal for using an iphone as a GPS device.

The competitions secretary and handicap secretary have agreed that they can't see any reason to stop me using my iPhone as a GPS device in the monthly medals or any other competitions within the club.

Now bearing in mind it's took 2 weeks for a response, I'm assuming they have looked into it and this is the decision they have come to and if I receive any complaints or queries I am to direct that person to the comp secretary.

Now I know it seems to be an interesting topic of conversation but I've been told I can use it by the best possible person in the club and I will be using it in a comp. He has obviously looked into it and found a loophole (or spoken to the R&A directly) and he's made his decision. Happy days for me. :)

Enjoy! :o

I missed this, why would it be a problem, why was it a problem?

Sadly with the current ruling as it stands an iPhone (because of two apps that cannot be deleted) cannot be used. A club cannot normally overide a rule from the national body.

It hacks me that I can't use my iPhone during comps, but that's the rules.

I'm pleased that you got the result you were hoping for, but it'll be interesting to know if they did take advice from the R&A and exactly what questions they asked them.

If I have an iPhone and just leave it in my bag on silent while I'm playing am I breaking the rules?

If I get it out to look at the rules app am I breaking any rules?

What are the two Apps that can't be removed?

Please don't tell me it's the weather and compass ones?

This'll be a giggle!

CK ;)

There's the compass one and that's the only one. The spirit level has to be downloaded and the weather one isn't a exact minute to minute report on temp, windspeed etc etc, it's just an overview for the day like anyone else can access on their mobile phone if it has an Internet capability (which is 99% of phones these days)

It's a sore subject I'm not getting into it.

I daren't ask what the comp secretary how he came to his decision but he's made his choice after 2 weeks of looking into it.

Interesting one this, and I'm sure the below link to the relevant R&A pages may well have been referred to in the earlier post which I missed.

The most important things are the 2nd part of point 3 in the 'clarification' section at the bottom, and what other facilities your iPhone has on it regardless of whether or not they're being used.

Well for weather I use the Mk1 eyeball as I do for direction and wind...will this be banned?

This is a game of trust, surely we can allow someone into a competition with a distance tool on their phone if they need it.

Doesn't every course have some form of distance markers and/or stroke savers? Boils down to the same thing really and if someone wants/needs to cheat their isn't any kind of rule that will stop them.

Soap box put away!

I think maybe it took two weeks to get to the top of his in tray.

The weather app is fine as it is a report and doesn't measure anything at source.

Unfortunatly I think your comp sec has come to the wrong decision as the compass would be in breach as is does actually measure at the source.

What advantage you gain I have little idea as I haven't seen anyone breaking course records using a compass but thats what my interpretation is.

Great news.

This means Android phones are fine because there's no built in compass (well, there isn't on mine).

I think the wrong decision has been made - as we eventually worked out, its a poor rule but a rule nontheless.
I wouldn't be assuming that they've spoken to the R&A about it but at the end of the day it's up to you.

Prepare for fireworks!! :D

Jezz, settle yourself down, dig out the original thread and be prepared for a long haul - two or three bottles should do it. :D

You still might need to convince the committee at your local club at some point in the future. The biggest thing to point out to them is that the rule only bans devices that can measure direction, wind speed etc. A report (i.e. weather app) is not an accurate measure of conditions at your location and time.

A spirit level app would make the device illegal also, even if it is not being used. As would a temp guage app measuring temp at source if one exists.
