Inverness & Surrounding Areas

May you will be fine, but as someone else said The Cairngorms courses are at least 2/3 months behind condition wise.

my choices in order, would be
Royal Dornoch
Nairn
Castle Stuart
Moray Old
Tain
Fortrose
Brora
Hopeman
Spey Valley / Boat of Garten

Spey Valley is prob one of Dave Thomas's best courses, it has some great holes, but there are a few treks between green and tee. I'm not a buggy fan, but here is the one place i would take one.

Nairn do a deal after 1pm, though i don't think Dornoch do that time of year and if they do it will be late.

I would steer clear of Strath, the views are great, but the gold course is not all that.
Patrick,

Interesting that you put Tain and Fortrose ahead of Brora. I actually enjoyed them both more than Brora but I don't think many would agree with that.

I am shocked however that Nairn didn't find its way to the top of the list ;)

Brora is pretty good its just a few holes on the back 9 let it down.
.
Nairn is a great course, but Dornoch is in the top 10 in the world.. if you are coming all this way, its a must play.

I am just back from a week away around there with a group of friends who I have a regular golfing trip with . I have little to add in terms of courses most have been mentioned though I have enjoyed both Nairn Dunbar and Golspie as well.
As far as reduced Green fees the Nairn ones are from 3pm( though they let us on early as the course was quiet).
We also got a Dornoch Firth pass which gives you a 40% reduction on the green fees for both Dornoch courses Tain Golspie and Brora. You have to play the main Dornoch course after 2pm and it costs £40 so won't suit everyone. A genuinely fabulous area , if you delay till mid May you can play very late in the evening.

What you mean the par 3 18th up the hill were you choked at all square....? I think its a great track and with Tain represent great value.

I rather play Tain and Brora for 90 quid rather than one round at Castle Stewart which has been designed for the Shermans....and in May there will be bus loads of them....

For me it would be:-

1. Castle Stuart (a unique course) watch the website videos. Fair from the tee, but mad and challenging around all the greens.

2. Great history and great course. They do twilight deals also.

3. Nairn, best greens out of the 3.

The rest........

BTW - that was meant to be Royal Dornoch in 2nd.

Looks like the general consensus is the same really.

I like the look of Dornoch over CS.

Will probably give Nairn a go too.

Patrick any ideas of the twilight deals at Nairn in May?

not just then, i was about 3 under gross standing on that tee in an open. hit the front and bounced to the back, hit a chip than went 2 foot past the pin and rolled all the way back down the front into the biggest divot Ive ever seen. failed to get it back up a few more times and ended up with a 12. a double would have won me the comp:(

I mean more the holes after the par 3 on the back, though not 17, that is a great hole.

Prob won't be set until the AGM, they usually review the prices then.

How may of you are there, might be able to help you out;)

Do you mean after the 13th.....thats a good stretch of holes with 15th a blind drive etc...the only marginal naff hole i would say is the 16....with the green 100 ft or so up on the right.

Yeah the 18th is a tricky one....probably the best play would be a bail out into the first cut either left or right of the green and go for a 4.

Can't quite member Chris, but there's two very similar drives one after the other and the longer one has the field on the right. last time i played the two guys i was with hit great tee shots and didn't find either ball. I knobbed it to the top of the slope, and made a 5 where both of them made 7. not great.
16th is the one after, thats not a great hole either

Yes I think that was the 15th you are talking about....anyway....who am i to criticise Mr. Braid.....

£190 for a round at CS is over the top IMHO, but that might be because I got a members invite on Dornoch and Nairn for about £20 and I'm just bitter I don't know anyone who can get me onto CS cheaply.... :)

£190 is very large.

It was £175 when we played it, but as we had over 40 forummers, we got it for £75, which was well worth it.

People were mainly split over who liked Royal Dornoch or CS the most. For me Royal Dornoch club and course is great, but CS was a truly unique course compared to ones I have played in the UK, also surrounded by outstanding views.
