Interlocking grip

learnt as kid with interlocking. but can swap between it and Vardon overlap with no problem. i've a noticeable gap (2x that of left hand) between my third finger and small finger when hands are relaxed, think that it arose from playing so much golf as early teen 12-14 year when your bones/body are still developing that makes it easy to get small finger to overlap for vardon without the uneasy feel or discomfort people mention.

I now use interlocking as it suits my small hands. my personal feel is I can be a bit more handsy with interlocking, vardon firms up.

problem i'd expect with a ten finger baseball grip is not making left hand (for RH'er) strong enough while keeping hands together as a unit.

Always used interlock, got small hands but also have long pianist fingers as someone mentioned above haha.

However I use baseball with my driver as I find it easier to square the face up at impact.

Thinking of trying baseball on my irons as I tend to flip at the ball and not hit down on my irons which really ruins my game (lack of distance and fat/thin shots, never get a good strike). Think I was reading something about it on golfwrx where someone suggesting trying it to help reduce the flipping.

I use a mixture of interlocking and baseball. I interlock my pinky finger but I don't have my right hand on top of my left thumb. Not sure if that makes any sense?

Out of interest, those who use/ have used interlocking, do you use it for putting? I went the whole hog last night and used it for putting as well, but that was the least successful of the experiment. Nine 2 putts but not one of the first putts scared the hole so back to my normal putting grip on Saturday.

One of the best iron players I have seen at our club uses NO wrist hinge.

I say that no wrist hinge is correct and is probably the reason why they are one of the best.

Rotation is what you should do instead... let me explain:

Hold your hand out in front and do a "Thumbs Up" then tilt the thumb towards your body and away from your body. This is wrist hinge.

Repeat the setup above but instead rotate your wrist so your thumb moves 90* to the right or left but no closer to your body i.e. half way to a "Thumbs Down". This is wrist rotation.

Which one do you do in your golf swing?

To not have any wrist hinge creates power, to have wrist hinge will be similar to a cast or will end up in a shank. In other words total loss of power!

I am working on adding wrist rotation but no hinge, I am hitting a far better ball than when I was making "negative hinge" (hinging the thumb away from me).

Look at Dustin Johnson. Not much wrist hinge there

I should probably add that Dustin Johnson does hinge on the other axis to what I described, he cups his hand and is a movement similar to what you do when knocking on a door.

I think both this and the other hinge I described are too many moving parts and only something else to go wrong. The best thing is to have no hinge, just rotation as if the forearm and wrist were one, less moving parts but still plenty of room for lag and power transfer from the body.

How did we get onto this from a grip topic?

my putting grip not too dissimilar from this -

for a few years I did play interlocking two fingers ..i.e. small finger of right hand went between 2/3 fingers of left hand, 3 finger of right hand between 1/2 fingers of left hand and thumbs approx down the grip. worked fine.

I used to have the same interlocking grip for all clubs, but I changed to vardon for putting and it helped me a lot. Now actually considering switching to vardon for my irons to see how it feels...
