Interesting development.

I have been in communication with the complince manager at English Golf and she contacted the club I am hoping to join to see where they stood. She said he was very helpful and positive but said he would prefer it if I fessed up to him when I applied to join, although he appreciated the need for privacy (she didnt know that I have already applied). He is going to have a word with the Lady Captain tomorrow, which is the same day I have to attend a new members meeting.
So I guess I ought to have a word with him tomorrow if I can.

difficult situation and I think you are very brave. One part of me thinks Honesty is the best policy and the other thinks its none of their business, but that's where practicality comes in and possibly a frank discussion with (who is this person, the Secretary I assume?) of the club will let you know whether you should be joining or not.

Hope it goes well Louise and the constructive attitude you've encountered is encouraging .

As I said though, it's nobody's business but your own and I think you'd be better keeping it to yourself. Otherwise just opening yourself up for all manner of ill-informed opinions and prejudices.

Impossible for a stranger to advise though, you'll know better than anyone whether that's practical or if they'd "read" you anyway or if you'd feel too uncomfortable with the "secret".

In addition, I'd agree that maybe trying to have a word with him before the meeting would be prudent, even though it wasn't as if you were hiding anything, having been a woman for 8 years.

Only you can decide what's best Louise. I'm guessing that you've had your fair share of discrimination in life and I'd hope that wouldn't happen at the club but would expect some of the ladies may be less than understanding. By the same token there will be plenty who hate such behaviour and would welcome you with open arms so perhaps being open and finding your place in the club from the outset would be a positive move.

If you take driver on par3's of 140yds and still come up short I wouldn't bother mentioning it... if you bomb 280yd high draws and all par5's are in range (off the whites) I might be tempted to have a 'lil word

hmmm...I check and double check my chin on a daily basis - and there are often a couple of mental long chinny hairs! My eyebrows have started to go a bit dennis healy too...

I wonder why he wants you to fess up to him about it?? Obviously he is one of those people who HAS to know everything about everyone so he feels powerful. Anyway, good luck with it, if they don't accept you then there are plenty more clubs out there who will happily take your money off you. Although in this day and age I can't imagine they'll have a problem, they'd be too worried about discriminating and getting sued.
