Independence Referendum For Scotland

Well, well. Who would have thought it? Looks like our cousins that live north of Hadrian's Wall are going to get a vote to decide between their independence or staying within the Union.

It will be interesting to see what happens....

Personally, I am agnostic on this but would be intrigued to see how Scotland would fare on it's own two feet. My bet would be it would not do very well. For example, if Scotland had been independent when RBS went through the floor, I bet that by now, the Scottish financial situation would make Iceland look like a paragon of prudence!

Alex Salmond as PM of Scotland sounds great though. A handsome, charismatic chap that is the embodiment of the typical Scottish male!

:D :D :D :D

Like you Snelly I dont care which way they go on the subject, but I really dont think that economically it will be in their interest overall. I am, though, unhappy that they (and others) can have different systems regarding prescription fees and university fees than we do when it's our money (as well as theirs) subsidising it.

It's bad enough that we get the headache of how to pay our kids tuition fees but we have to pay over £7 for the tablets to cure it as well as parking fees to get the tablets and the diagnosis!

These things have to be the same everywhere!

I voted SNP because I trust them to do whats right in the day to day running of Scotland. The other 3 main parties only have their personal and party interests at heart and would aleays be looking back to their bosses at Westminster.

Does it mean I want independence? No, Scotland is and always should be a huge part of GREAT BRITAIN and i'll vote that way in a referendum. A vote for the SNP was a vote for the wellbeing of Scotland, not for independence.

I'm sure Scotland would do perfectly ok on its own, but I wonder what would the rest call itself, the disunited kingdom or just England like most foreigners do now anyway. and what happens after Alex Salmon, the SNP didn't seem quite so attractive when he stepped down last time. Interesting times?

Politics is usually dull as but this election has been very interesting.
Independence - I just don't know.

Politics is built on big characters these days, Salmond is a big character and has the common touch, he is a very skilful politician and has played Westminster like a fiddle. When Tony Blair sorted devolution he would not have foressen what happended yesterday. People can relate to Salmond. He looks out for Scotland and is not answerable to bosses in London, people like that up here.

For the first time the younger generation of Glasgow at last have accepted that there is an alternative to Labour, you don't have to vote Labour just cos your grandad did!

On another note why is it every man and his dog could see Iain Gray was a hopeless choice for Labour as is Ed Milliband, his brother David was so obvious for the job yet the powers that be can't see it - the people that make these choices are clearly so out of touch with normal everyday people!

Who'd be a politician, cushy job one day then on the dole the next!

Good summation of salmond birdieman. He definitely knows how to engage the people.

Never have been sure of independence even when i lived there. A lot of folk ive spoken to say they vote snp to look after Scotlands interests but wont be voting for independence.

Will be very interesting.

Salmond is the best political leader in Britain. If not best Politician.

He wasn't allowed at the tv debates before the general election because the others new he would run rings round them.

Today is a day I will remember for the rest of my life.It signals the first step on our journey towards The Republic of Scotland.

I am going to apply for a job working at the passport control office at Gretna, checking English peoples passports as they enter my country. :D :p

I think it would be a sad day were it to happen

It just can't happen, unless the old wall gets built again, this time across the entire border.

I suppose you will no longer wish to be part of the EEC either. Not that I feel European in any way. However, if Scotland distances itself from the EEC, will this mean that Scots will no longer have the right to settle and live in the UK.
Better get your visa application in for those south of the border trips! ;)

To be honest I wouldn't want to be part of the EEC any more.

It is getting to big.I think it was a big mistake allowing countries like Romania and Bulgaria to join. These countries are extremely poor and I can't really see any beneit to us by being joined to them.

I wouldn't worry, it'll never happen. If there's a proper referendum which asks the correct question then it'll never happen ;)
