Popped into a small local AG on Friday just to have a quick look at a new driver to replace my stolen one. I was really going to look at the Ben Sayers Benny (after the GM test review) but found a new G5 10.5 degree with stiff Aldila NV shaft at £90. This was exactly the same spec as my R7 that I was fitted to. The test bay had two guys trying irons and another was waiting. I was severely tempted to just buy the G5 but a wee voice told me although it was the same spec it is a different head and may perform differently. On leaving the shop I was proud that I had resisted temptation just to buy it.

On Saturday morning I went to do the weekly shop myself (Tesco is next door) and flew round in minutes and went straight into AG to try the G5 only to find that they had sold it late Friday.

Can’t help but think I missed out there. All I can say is that those of you are tempted to buy on a whim, don’t listen to any voices in your head (or the wife) JUST BUY IT!!! :D

Well a couple of months back Cobra had a demo day at my club and I was hitting the new Speed 08 drivers when my pro came out and said I should try the Reg shafted (blue colour)10.5 one as he reckoned with my low ball flight which he is alway taking the piss out of it would help get a better flight on it with this shaft.....true enough I was hitting it into orbit (or higher to the Pro!) and with a nice feel and shape so that was it sold on me.2 months later however the Pro still has not got one in despite me constantly asking him so then it dawned on me to look on Ebay on Saturday and secured one 3 hours after starting to look!!
I bet you it doesnt perform like it did 2 months ago so look out for it back on ebay!!
Should be here tomorrow so may have to knock off early and go play!

Stu you either missed out on a good buy or it was fate not to get it.

I was in our (not so) local AG on sunday & was trying out a G5 fairway, a G10 fairway & a G10 hybrid. I felt the shaft in the G5 fairway was a little on the soft side & the G10 shafts just that little bit (reasueringly) firmer

Ironic thing is I actually found a hybrid I liked, as I may hold onto my Yonex fairway woods for a bit longer even though I loved the G10 fairway.

(btw anyone want to buy a Ben Hogan hybrid..?)

also managed to resist a buy.
Friday, wet, went to dg.
They offered me a few 3-woods to try with a big bucket of balls - well you can't refuse can you?
First batch TM Burner, Callaway X and Nike SQ
- Cally longest off the tee, not good off the mat - dq'd
- Nike, probably most consistent but hard work - dq'd
- TM pretty long and good off the mat
Second batch TM, Cobra LD and Srixon M-Speed
- Cobra, reg shaft far too much flex - dq'd
- Srixon, stiff, ok off tee and good off the mat

so the next test starts with these two

This is the same driver and same spec I use and I cant speak highly enough of it. It is a fine driver and it will be in my bag for a long time to come methinks.

A mate of mine has an identical one, he has just bought a G10 and he is looking for £75 inc postage for the G5.

This is my way with things. A bargain is only just that if it's what you ideally want or was in your perfect specification (like cars or shoes!) and was less then normal price. If you have to mull it over, and then it's gone, it probably wasn't for you.

I was looking at some MX25's in Feb for £325, they had been used a few times and repolished and looked new, I umm'd and arrr'd and when I went to buy them someone had bought them :( so I ended up with the MX19's and now I want to replace them.

Buy second best & you buy twice.

or in my case, three or four times...rofl.

Actually I was more than happy with both my Yonex & Lynx Irons. And if it hadn't been for the Fact My Nike irons were a 5-PW & 3 & 4 Hybrid CPR's I'd have probably have still been using those, or any of them for that matter.

But sometimes you just have to gas on new equipment.

Have to say it is taking alot of restraint to avoid stocking up on Woodworm gear. My AG manager is offering to do me a deal given how much gear I've bought over the year after September when technically their Summer range finishes (over and above any promotion AG as a business may offer).

My head is saying mmmm yes please but my credit card and head are saying something different. Its a case of do I really need anymore golf shirts or am I just buying because it is cheap.

I happen to think there is an element of fate in all of this. I went to the demo day where I bought my X20's (Callaway, TM, Wilson and Yonex) with the intention of trying the new burner irons and drivers. Had already had a set of custom X20's at the start of the year which got traded in when I was pratically given my R7's. Ironically I couldn't hit any of the new TM gear well and thought it was down to my swing. Walked down two bays and tried the X20's in graphite and stroking them high and long. Had to get them!

I think If I hadn't Gassed on the S57's (I keep wanting to call them SM57's but that's one of the classic shure microphone in the music buisiness), I'd have been gassing on a set of Callaway Tour X20's with the project X shafts, or even the X20 forged irons. Great irons.

Really debating what to do with my Yonex irons as they've not that many months had those nice Winn grips on them.

Perhaps a clearout of some of my guitars, basses & amps might be in order, as not done any gigs in ages &the band I was in is on indefinite hold.

As regards the woodworm shirts its always worth a look in a branch of TK Maxx. Infact most of my golf clothing is care of those nice people at TK Maxx, appart from my Stomberg Trousers, which I tend to source from Morley Hayes

I ended up with a set of TM LTIIs at the 'end of year' clear out a couple of years back. I had seen them on the shelf in the pro shop and thought they looked nice. Well, ended up buying a set. Nice enough clubs but they just didn't do it for me I'm afraid. I don't know what it is/was about them but they just didn't fit my eye the way I thought they would.

Oh the joys of an impulse buy!
