Because someone might come along that I actually believe and trust - thought that would be obvious

Do you meet the requirements that you expect for the members of this mythical utopian party. Doe's anyone?

Are you not being somewhat naive in your expectations?

And so putting aside politics as that which is an anathema to some, we find that when in need of advice or counsel your MP is there to help - he may not be the first person you'd go to for most issues that you have to confront through life but there are some where he may be the best person to go to. Rather than rather apathetically hoping that everyone else will elect the person you are most likely to trust when you are in need maybe it is worthwhile putting the effort in on these purely selfish and self-centred terms to vote. After all your vote only goes as far as electing your MP - no further.

You need not bother yourself with any considerations of what your MP does or say politically as on that you may not trust him - but your interest is not in any of that - your interest is in what he can do for you personally. So if politics and politicians turn you off maybe you should all get out there and just vote for who you trust and could share our personal problems with in times of need. You can wash your hands of him politically if that is what you wish to do.

Back to the Poll: I know the voters have been a bunch on a Golf Forum so as suggested may not be representative of the general public and its quite a small number of people involved (similar to most polls actually ;)) I am surprised by the results thus far though, I thought Labour may have done better, the Conservatives worse and UKIP with next to nothing.

Conversely, it's the exact result I would have expected.. Maybe I read more threads than you? :D

Well if you actually believe that all candidates in an election and hence all MPs in the current parliament are the same, and that somehow UKIP candidates and MPs will be different - noting that we do not actually know how UKIP MPs will behave - well that is pretty sad I would suggest. In fact I'd suggest that were someone to actually state that they really and truly believed that all MPs (including UKIP MPs of whom we know little) were the same then I would suggest they are either seriously mistaken or telling a porky (for whatever reason - the only one I can think of being that it seems to be a 'clever thing' to be anti-politics)

Interested why you expected that?

Just based on the nature of the majority of replies to threads that highlight a political leaning. There is also a slight geographical bias with regards to Tory heartlands. Golfers as a demographic are also usually relatively affluent and there is a definite age bias that would lead to concluding that "traditional" values would be prevalent.

Or, it could just be a hunch..

And for those who think all politicians are the same - clearly this is not the thinking of many in Scotland as 20,000 have bought tickets to go to listen to and question Nicola Sturgeon on a 'road show' she is doing. And this includes a 13,000 sell out of the Glasgow SSE Hydro. Can't see many other UK politicians having that sort of pulling power.

I did go to a charity dinner speech by Michael Portillo this year that was a sell out. He was very good, maybe a candidate for the best Prime Minister we never had.

seriously!!!! people are paying to listen to that vile woman, she is an embarrassment.

The tickets are free

And to get the gist of it - she basically goes on about the fight for Independence for Scotland happening in the next 5 years !

I refer you back to post 51 your honour. The values which a lot of golfers love so much about the game are classic conservative values. And as for UKIP doing so well then that's golfers that have overdosed on The Daily Mail. ;)

I'm with Bluewolf, they are what I would have expected and probably would be repeated if you asked all golf club members.

Anyway - I'll be voting Labour. Jeremy Hunt seat in Surrey is never going to have much chance (see also 'no chance') of seeing Labour winning but that is not why I will vote for them. I have voted Lib Dem in the past as a protest vote that had a chance of succeeding and de-seating the tories when Virginia Bottomley stood down but never felt comfortable doing so - and I fear that the Tory protest vote down here may go to UKIP rather than Lib-Dem. So back to Labour for me and my vote counting as +1 in the local total against what the Tories (led by Hunt in this matter) are doing and have planned for the NHS.

As it happens if I took a totally 'what can my MP do for me?' view ignoring politics, I'd probably vote for Hunt as he has helped us on difficult stuff in the past and is an approachable and likeable guy.

Doesn't actually matter that much what she thinks or wants - it's what the folk who voted want who will determine any near term push for a referendum. If there is no huge appetite for one there won't be one - but the raison d'etre of the SNP has not gone. The September referendum being but just one snapshot in time.

oh theres an appetite all right- a deluded and naive one, and also not a majority, but an appetite right enough.

Thanks to liverpoolphil for correcting your misunderstanding of anyone paying to listen to that poor woman.

What have they done and are planning to do thats so bad for the NHS? And, what would labour do better, bearing in mind their handling of the NHS is Wales!
