Getting an ipad next month. not sure why really, except the opportunity was there, so I thought I'd have one (since I won't be able to use it for email in China, it's going to be pretty useless, but what the heck). Not got an iphone, or ipad touch, so not really sure what the point of it is, how it works, or what people do on them.

So, when I get it, what apps do I need to put on it? I Won't be using it for work, so don't need spread sheets and stuff, just something to amuse me in my spare time.

Any ideas?

Don't really know. Don't have PS3, xbox, etc, and haven't played any games since asteroids when I was a kid. I guess they have moved on a bit.

Had a brief go with a PS, tried GTA, totally baffled by it.

Will be buying a scrabble app. Will probably have a look at angry birds, but other than that, no idea.

Music - Last FM & Tune In Radio (You can pick up any radio station by genre)
Sports - PGA, Euro Tour, Sky Sports ( Get the US masters one next year)
TV - Sky+ ( You can recored TV on teh go)
News - BBC & SKY. LIFE is also v.good
Shopping - Ebay, Paypal & Amazon ( for your golf kit purchases)

Thats the basics for me, but tonnes of games etc f

My favourites are...

Trainyard (puzzle solving)
Angry Birds
DoodleJump (platform game)
Shredder (chess)
Skies Of Glory (WW2 flight game)
Need For Speed (car racing)
Glyder (flying fantasy game)

I also got Worms as I used to love that game, but it's a bit too small and fiddly on the iPhone, probably much better on an iPad.

Another vote for Tune In Radio. Also TVCatchup (actually a website) if download limits isn't a problem.

Also raved about are FlightControl and Cut The Rope, but I'm not that keen on them.

Why could you not use it in China? I used my exceedingly rubbish smart phone to send emails in HK.....which ever version you have, it'll have wi-fi. Jump on it, and send away.

Wifi doesn't exist in the factories I visit, I have to plug into a network with a cable, and the ipad doesn't have a port. In the hotels, there is a wifi, but it is unbelievably slow, and so I always plug in again.

I could use the 3g, but the cost is a bit prohibitive. Not sure my company would be happy with the bill.

Not really sure how I lived without an iPad now I have one!

Spent alot of last night downloading pointless apps, it's great.

Flick Golf HD is VERY addictive and Apple's Garageband is chuffing awesome (if you're even remotely interested in music).

I downloaded a few free ones last night for something to do.

Stickman Cliff Diving is easy to while away a lot of time with.
Stickman Golf doesn't bear a lot of resemblance to real golf, but is very addictive.

Still have a couple more to try out.

Oh, that's bad luck. It's a shame it's not like a phone, and you can buy a sim card. Orange quoted me £1.69 p/min for H.K. whereas I bought a card there and phoned all over the world for the equivalent of 10p/min.

I like the iPad, but something tells me they need to sort out an ethernet plug and other stuff for it.

Can it play movies from usb? I could always send you a USB stick with some films on ready "converted" for apple? or is that illegal too?

Get Skype for it, then you can ring people with it :) also if you jailbreak it, which is now perfectly legal you can make it work off 3G and there are loads of awesome stuff you can do with it. Only takes 30 mins max to do and that is with creating a custom firmware. :)

ipad doesn't have a port

You are kidding. What media transfer methods do they have? I really want to get an ipad.

I'd have one already if apple didn't make it all so hard to use with external stuff.

Basically, (unless I'm wrong) everything you put on it has to go down the iPad-pc/usb lead. I've worked out how to transfer ripped and converted dvds onto an iPod - I guess it's the same.

Yea, it's a bit of a pain but more than manageable. I download divx videos and there's an app which let you live stream/convert them to your iPad over wifi (and 3G if you have the 3G pad) so as long as your pc is on (mine always is) it's great. You can select to convert and save them as iTunes videos files if yo wanted to store them on the iPad as well.

I flippin love this thing!
