As a Scotsman from Motherwell, a town that still bares scars of Thatchers cuts I never thought the day would come that I would agree with a Tory Primeminister but after hearing and reading DC's comments about multiculturalism in Britain failing I agree whole heartedly with his opinion.

Camerons speach

I am not a racist. I could not be friends with anyone who is racist but I am a culturalist. I beleive that anyone who wants to live in this country and benifit from the services this country provides should be willing to contribute financially and socially.

The guy's got balls.

Good to see someone actually come out and make statements such as that. Normally the "Big 3" in politics usually skirt around the subject, leaving it to the more extreme right wing groups to test the water.

I have to agree with many of his remarks. Why should the country sponsor these groups who have nothing but hatred for this country and it's inhabitants? It's complete madness, but we (as a nation) have actively subsidised them.

Don't get me wrong, the majority of ethnic minorities only wish to live peacefully in this country. The more extreme groups only have scorn for this country, it's beliefs and traditions. Subsequent governments have bowed to these groups, leaving us a nation without positive identity, ashamed of our past and afraid to celebrate our cultures.

End of!

I also agree with what he said but what are they going to do about it?.Its a tricky one but anyone who preaches haterd they way these so called clerics do then they should be binned from back to where they came from, then we'll see how much they want to come back here to a cushy life paid by us the tax payer.

I'm not a racist but he's totally correct, after the comments i wonder how long it will take for Mr Griffen to reply.

I think he's dead wrong, as I look only at food you get a fantastic variety in this country and for most of its existence briton has been multicultural -Celts, Angles, Saxons, Jutes, Danes, Romans, Jews, Huguenots, Poles, Irish, Indian, Caribean. I'm sure this is not an exhaustive list. It's what has made this country - its tolerance. Its a delicate balance but we've avoided the ghetto culture of the USA but it is a real threat if drive minorities into seclusion and Camerons speech helps on-one.

Have you read this thread properly and, more importantly, what DC said in the speech. If you have, I think that you may have mis-understood.

Weren't we run by a Scot for the past few years? (and had him at our purse strings for the past decade)

The Scottish have their own parliament.. what more do you want to cry about? The Scottish attitude has weakened Britain. Nothing more.

JustOne ... what are you banging on about now?

Are you just using this as a wee anti-scottish rant?

I was refering to the Ravenscraig steelworks that were closed down and put 10,000 men on the scrap heap. A close friend of mine committed suicide because he couldn't get a job and was going to loose his house. Its no secret that Thatcher wanted to walk over the Scottish. Do you forget she introduced the poll tax up here 1 year before applying it in England. Tory PM's have done eff all for Scotland in my lifetime.

For the record you will find it hard to hear support up here for our MSP's voting at Westminster on English policies. There are instancies where we are embarrassed by the actions of our parliament regarding trams and Holyrood but in the grand scheme of things we have held our own in the union.

Oh, and I guess you will be saying that Blair was Scottish too.

Eh, just what is 'the Scottish attitude'?

Cameron was talking about Muslims and that they often get treated with 'cotton golves', it had nothing to do with Thatcher's Britain, Motherwell or the financial standing of your community.

Scotland having their own parliament did as much to weaken the nation as any Muslim community could do. It's a shame you just seem bitter towards everyone else and don't look more introspectively.

Maybe we should just set up a Muslim parliament and be done with it?

I find my self in the same camp to be honest but with reservations.....apart from the Thatcher comments obviously which are fully justified. :)

Racism is indeed an emotive topic which was brought home to me many years ago while a student in Colchester in the early 80's. Being attacked for having a fellow student friend with you who happened to be from Iran does indeed concentrate the mind. Since then I have always taken people as I find them. I don't care where they come from, what their background is or what colour they are. If they are law abiding, hard working and have manners then I generally get on with them fine. I'm ashamed to say that this attitude results in me taking a dislike to more English people than any other ethnic group.

It's easy to say multi culturalism hasn't worked David. Personally I don't think it ever had a chance mostly due to the ignorance and prejudice inbred over many generations in the average British adult. It's OK now taking the high ground and saying "they" won't integrate when 30 years ago nobody wanted to live next door to anyone with a differnt culture..... it would have lowered property prices after all. This created whole areas of immegrant communities. The very haven for the islamic extremism we now see.

But we are where we are and the rise of islamic fundamentalism is a real problem when these guys start blowing people up and to sort it out we need a major rethink. What Cameron has said is one thing but I see as yet no real plan for reversing the situation that's been crerated over the last half century by spineless politicians from all parties.

I'm all for multiculturalism, but I think its failed due to the goverments ignorance towards every person, regardless of culture or race.
If they had kept a reign on immigration it would have helped, but instead they open the flood gates, and force brits and even legal immigrants out of work by allowing illegals to come here and work for a tenth of the usual wage. One of many reasons theres hatred and spitefullness towards immigrants, who are in no way to blame, as I'm sure we would all love a meal ticket compared to their former lives.

As for Scotland and having their own goverment, if Australia deserved it then the Scots did! And I'm English ;)

Why shouldn't we have our own parliament in Scotland? Should Westminster decide everything that happens in Scotland? Why did our parliament weaken the nation?

Can we have our own one in England that hasn't got any Scots, Welch, or Irish in it please. Why should all those have any input as to what happens in MY COUNTRY? They've all got there own but interfere in ours. WTF is that all about?
