Played in a Pro-Am* yesterday and the very helpful pro encouraged me to work on my short game from 100yds in. I don't have a lot of time on my hands due to the daily commute and the wee 11 month old, so any chance i get for golf is generally devoted to playing rather than practicing.

We do have a park area along the street from us that i could sneak out to for some 20 minute practice sessions in the evening. Anyone got any good drills that i could do to help me with my close range approach play?

*If you get the opporchancity to do this, grab it - i learned more from playing a full round - particularly course management - with a tour pro than i have in the last year.

Take 3 balls with you, drop them down, hit the first one 50y, the second 70y and the last one 90y. They should be 20 paces apart as you pick them up... repeat indefinately :)

This will start to dial in your backswing to various positions on the 'clockface'. If you know 50, 70, 90 then you'll save a lot of shots.

As you pick them up step out your paces to the first ball.. if it's not 50y then you have to try harder.

(Note: To keep Imurg happy I'm going to have to ASSUME that each of your steps is APPROXIMATELY 1 yard) :)

well just a thought for when the babies asleep use airflow balls. yes i know this want help you with the distance but as you improve your swing (the main thing within this drill) you will be able to control your swing and therefore the ditance.

I use this drill by opeing a draw in my wardrobe leaving only a 5cm ish gap for the ball to fit through. When i can get all 10 in then i know i was lucky :D

I have been working on 100 yards in at the range doing the following.

finding 3 targets within that range, and judging them long (100ish) mid (60-80) and short (20ish)

then I hit 3 balls at the long, 2 at the mid and 1 at the short and award myself a point if they hit a 10 yard area around it and then keep repeating that cycle with different clubs and then making a note of the total score once I have hit 8I-60 degree lob.

this challenges me to be competative with myself to remember/learn the swing feel I need better than just to hit multiple balls at the same target and gives me a goal to go for next time

No offence intended to anyone, but if I hear the expression dialled-in again, I'm going to self-combust.

I'm not the best from 50-70, but I normally knock it on the green and not too short or long.

I can do under 50 and 80/95/110 are ready made with my wedges.

I have a "no-wrist-break" swing, an "easy" (3/4) and "full".

Anything else is just a figment of my imagination.

I practice the full ones on the range. I practice the other two on the pitching ground, messing around with a variety of clubs and styles (open face, hooded "low" ones, lobs, runners, all sorts).

Credit to those that can do it, but......I say learn by what you see and what you do/don't need to get over to find the flag.
