After todays round and hitting the ball nicely, im getting a bit fed up with my putting. 38 putts today having hardly missed a green, I could have broke par with a good day on the greens.

The greens have just been spiked out and covered in sand, hopefully in anticipation of the 1st april when our season starts. But 38 putts is at least 6 too many.

Im tempted to buy one of these: Scotty

what do you think?

If your going to buy one, I reckon you should find a stockist and find the right one! I love me scotty almost as much as I love the wife....well, maybe a bit more sometimes, but if your paying the money, get the right one ;)

A Scotty will not make you a better putter if you are expecting it to don't buy it, it may make to a bit more consistent, the only thing that will make you a better putter is the right practice.

The only reason i have to change is because the putter face on mine is a bit soft and im looking for a slightly firmer face. I'm not expecting it to improve my putting stroke. I dont think im too far away from being half decent on the greens

Thats good, sorry I wasn't getting at you, I just worry sometimes that people expect new clubs to make them better gofers

If you are a decent putter anyway I would say there is very little better than a Scotty

My fault, the OP didnt really mention the soft face. Its the Oddyssey insert that is soft, so i'm thinking the milled face would be a touch firmer.

I started off using a mates 2-ball and hated it for the same reason. Bought my Scotty 2.7 and never looked back. Make sure you know what suits your putting stroke. If your stroke is straight back straight through I recommend you look at the face balanced one. There aren't many face balanced Scotty's, smine is and it's a gem. I also had heavier weights put in mine which gave me a smoother stroke. Happy shopping and happy putting.

Tiger, can you have a quick look at the link i posted and let me know about it being 'face balanced'?? Not sure Im getting what you mean, i didnt think they were offset at all

by the way, the head of this is almost identical to my current putter, i just want a firmer putter face

Take your pick

I struggle with my odyssey and its soft insert in the winter, and our greens are slower, but come the summer months when our greens are very fast it is perfect. I have an old ping anser circa 1975 which is great on slow greens, but a nightmare on quick ones. Maybe worth trying different putters for different green speeds ?

As a small fly in the ointment, if you want a firmer feel why not try the Ping Anser or TM range which are both firm faced, come in a variety of models and will be a lot cheaper than a Scotty. Alternatively why not invest in a 30 minute putting lesson (about £20-25) and make sure it it isn't the guy on the end that's the problem

Here's an interesting youtube clip of 2 of the great putters, Loren Roberts and Ben Crenshaw. Very different techniques but very similar tempo which is key-

Neither uses or used Scottie putters. Roberts uses an old Cobra putter and Crenshaw a Wilson blade. Just saying Scotties aren't the be all and end all. They are of undoubted quality but they wont necessarily be suited to you.
Keep an open mind with brand, type and length and try everything until you find one you really like as putting is a lot about confidence after you have the basic technique right. Brand and cost isn't so relevant to good putting I don't think.

Scotties do look damn fine though ;)

Thanks for all the replies.

I have had this one for about 10 years and its too soft. Reckon i'll try a load tomorrow morning at a couple of shops.

I have a lesson available that i havent used yet so thats an option. Was going to leave it till after easter and prob have it on the greens anyway. But i'm not liking the feel of mine, though what was a good idea was the option of putters for different green speeds

when you balance the putter on a couple of fingers by the neck where does the face point. If it's straight up it's face balance and suits a straight back straight through stroke. You must try them first though. I had my heart set on the 2.6 tried it and couldn't use it at all but fell in love with the 2.7. The Ping Ansers are also nice putters but I just felt supremely confident with the scotty in hand and that sold it for me.

A putting lesson with a pro is not a bad shout. I had one to find out what type of putter I should get and it was the pro that set me off looking for face balanced putters. Hope this helps. T

Ignore everyone's well meant advice and follow your own Spin.

Putters are very much about how they feel in your hands and that may be a £5 second hand bin reject that feels best rather than a couple hundred quid on a Scotty that will expose any flaws in your stroke.

Why buy a copy of the original and best putter made, the Anser?????

Just buy a Ping Anser. Simple, or treat yourself to a Redwood Anser.

I bought a Scotty in January, and wouldn't swap for the world. Have been a die hard Ping fan for 20 odd years, and was looking at a new Ping putter, I was in AG trying out the Ping's, and then trying some of the others for comparison. I was down to the Ping and one of the new Odyssey White Hot's, until I spotted a Scotty and gave it a try. It was the Newport 1.5 and I was so much more consistent with it compared against the other two.

I then had the luxury of spending time almost every day for 2 weeks in a golf superstore whilst I was in Japan visiting the family. Here I was able to spend a lot of time trying out putters. At first I carried on trying the Newport vs the Odyssey, until I spotted a Scotty Squareback no. 1. Once I'd tried that, there was no going back. I effectively practiced with it every day for the rest of the hols. When I got back I found the best price online and then got my club pro to match it (don't buy one of these off e-bay.....).

As someone above said, putters are personal, I agree, spending this amount of money you need to be sure it's the one for you. Personally, I haven't been disapointed, my putting is so much more consistent and I'm very happy with mine, just wish it didn't take me 5 shots to the green each time :D.
