Hi all,

Just wanted to share my happiness! I've been off of 17-18 for around 3 seasons and just couldn't seem to move. A lot of winter practise seems to have paid dividends this year.

I started as 17.6 in April and after yesterdays Gross 74, I have hit single figures!! I had 14 pars and 4 bogeys. A nice cut has put me off 9! To say I am happy is an understatement.

I know a few people talk about the importance of the short game, to give you an idea of how important it is, have a look at my FIR / GIR / Putts from yesterday.

FIR - 7
GIR - 7
Putts - 28

what type of work where you doing over the winter months? Drving range? How did you work on your short game? i find it harder to work on it over the winter with so much cold and wet weather in n.ireland.

The winter was just spent chipping and putting. I have a box of around 50 balls, all well used Pro-V's and I practised with different lies, shots over bunkers, etc.. with different lofted clubs. I use my 52 / 56 / 60 depending on lie, I had a few lessons on different techniques, when to fizz one in, flop, etc.. I practise my short game for around an hour a day, due to my job, my hours are very flexible so it affords me the time. I also play 9 holes most nights and 36 at the weekend.

When actually on the range, I buy 2 buckets of balls (around 150) and start with my wedge and work may way up, aiming at specific targets, like a flag or a yardage marker and try different shot shapes, stances, etc... Before every range shot, I do my pre shot routine as I find it helps keep concentration and slows me down.

Thanks some sound advise there.. Must try and put some of this into Practice this winter.. I was flying at the start of the season tho falling away somewhat of the goals i was aiming for this year.. Waste some amount of shots playing into and around the green. Putting itself is fairly good.

Very impressive....well done.

I dread to think how good you could be if you hit a few more fairways :)

7 greens and 14 pars.....that is SCORCHING.

Or the other way. 11 greens missed, only 4 bogeys. AWESOME.

:)

That is some come down in such a quick period and shows what dedication and the right practice can do. My short game has always been an achilles heel but I've worked hard on my putting in particular. Chipping is still so so but it'll come

Great shooting mate.

How do you find the S9 1 3 + 5 wood?

I love them! When I am in the groove, the things fly! i can hit the 3 wood further than my driver when I am hitting well. They aren't too forgiving though!

Thanks Homer, it has taken a lot of practise and frustrations to get there but it is possible with a lot of dedication. My aim was 12 for the year, which I have now surpassed. Next aim is 8!

Well done, thats a fantastic achievement in one year, and some dedication to practise !!

I'm nearly there myself @ 9.8, but despite setting myself some goals for practise, I do find it hard motivating myself to actually go and do it.

12/14 holes and a beer after is just so much more tempting !!

Well done again.

Well done a great cut in one season--i have managed to go from 19.4 to 14.4 in the same period and was well chuffed but your progress is superb.

Time to re assess the aims for the rest of the season.

Congrats on your great handicap cut, it's well deserved after all the hard work you put in.

Not wishing to rain on your parade, and as much as I love this game, I just cannot commit to so much time - unless of course I want to be in the divorce courts!

I suppose it's about getting a happy medium for most, but good luck in your efforts to come down even further :)

I have a very understanding girlfriend ;)

That is a great cut since April! Wow.

It's amazing how a good short game can really save shots.

Firstly, it gets you out of jail when things go wrong, then you start making pars that would have been no better than bogeys, and hey presto, suddenly pars are flying in all over the place.

If I ever get happy with my long game, I'm giving up with swing changes and living on the pitching area/putting green!

April 09....h'cap 17
July 09....gross 74.....

I may need to lie down.

Well done! that's an incredible improvement... sending over a virtual bottle of bubbly.. *hic* :o

Thoughts of scratch creeping in yet? :D
