After a season away from club golf due to being unhapy with what was on offer I have joined the course where I grew up next to the 17th. I could have joined last year but didnt want to pay the £700 joining fee which was rumoured to be on its way out. I got in today and am looking forward to my 1st round as a member on Sunday.

I haven't played a medal for over 15 months so (birdieman) can a handicap secretary or anyone else tell me if I will have to play for my handicap again.

As long as they aren't off temp greens I can't see why you can't put cards in anytime. Glad to see you are back at your spiritual home as it were and hope it all goes well. I'm contemplating a move too!

I can never understand why people leave their clubs to go elsewhere especially if they have been long term members,I can understand it if you joined it as your 1st club, didn't like it and then moved on or if say finances forced a moved but to be a member for a while then move always puzzles me.

Little loyalty nowadays and I suppose clubs themselves have a lot to answer for as many have no joining fees now.
I for one certainly could not move from my club,I am lucky in that it's a class track but we had a period where condition was an issue (accident with the greens and we lost some) but never did I think of moving on.... I have been a member for 30 years and would think I will be till I can play no more.

But Dodger, you haven't played RA.

I would not move clubs either, as I love my course / club. Or at least, not until The Grove takes on members.

Can you imagine the cost though murph....i agree that the Grove is a fantastic track, but it should be for the cost!

But I could walk there, and funds permitting, have the odd Stella and not have to drive home.

It wouldn't be cheap though. We can all dream.

Homer. If you are thinking of moving, does this mean that next year's Forum spring meeting at RA is definitely a non starter now?

Does that mean I can keep the trophy? I haven't had it engraved yet, as I thought I could save money by getting two years done at the same time.

Murph I take it from that you mean you too would wish to be moving on if you were a member of RA??

Just remember, nothing more than a 12 handicap for you will be recognised at any forum outing ;)

Well done, I'm sure this will be a lot better than Ice Station Shotts :D

Glad you are happy with the change, but your new clubs website has to be one of the worst I have ever seen!

I like seeing where people play, and am green with envy at Dodger's place...no true links within 100 miles of Sussex :(

Al, I agree with your comment but my first real club I joined was getting a reputation for corruption and I didnt fancy playing golf in kevlar pringle. When I went to Shotts and as DCB so elloquently put it, it was blooooooooody cold. On my birthday in May '08 I left Motherwell in 24* sunshine and got to Shotts and it was 15* and blowing a gale and its only 12 miles away. You are a member of an extraordinary course and are weathered regarding the wind but I fell as though (circumstances allowing) I will be there a long, long time.

IF I go then it'll be because the greens are much better (Maidenhead have always had a reputation for excellent greens), economics and better practice facilities. However not knowing anyone apart from the new pro arriving soon makes me nervous as does the way they do things (are competitions drawn, can I go out as a solo player etc)

There are a lot of ifs and maybes to be decided first. If I do go then obviously I'd invite my esteemed Forum friends to join me at my new hone for the GM Spring Meet there instead. At the moment its only an idea and I'll see what happens at the RA AGM first and their plans for 2010 before I do anything.

Whatever happens there will be a GM Spring Meet somewhere (Ascot, Maidenehead, Leatherhead or Tyrells Wood have all been mentioned) and so Murph will need to get the trophy engraved and then put it up to be won again.

Mad,
Your handicap from 2008 is still relevant as long as you returned 3 cards in 2008.
For 2009 you need 3 cards returned again so if your new club are still running qualifying comps in Nov/Dec hopefully you can get 3 cards in before the year is out.
Otherwise you'll be putting in 3 cards for handicap next year.
You'd need your old club to forward you handicap record to your new club to speed things along.

You are a total bandit off 11 anyway so hopefully your new match and handicap will see through the 11 h'cap disguise!! ;)
