I had always said that I would never have a hybrid in my bag purely on principal.
Cheating Sticks I called them.
If you cant hit a long iron then give up!!

Well now I dont play as much as I once did I secretly bought a Graphite Cleveland Hi-bore Hybrid 1 & 2 to replace my 4 wood and 2 iron.

I was right they are cheating sticks and I LOVE THEM!!!!

I would suggest that Mr Morris would call all the clubs in all our bags cheating sticks sir!

I would guess that 10% of the people who play golf now would give up after 2 goes with the old school bats

(Still think chippers are the devils work though :D)

Glad you've seen sense. In my opinion anyone who chooses to not use them due to them being easier to hit is depriving themselves of better golf. Too many people try and kid themselves that they hit long irons as well as hybrids, which although true in some cases is still a flawed argument as if you hit one as well as the other why not go for the more versatile option in the hybrid.

That said some people just don't get on with them and / or prefer the trajectory of a long iron so may have a case to not have one in the bag. There are not many professionals these days that don't have one in their set up though so I'm all for them.

Alchemy, I had the same opinion 6 or 7 months ago when I came bag to the game.
I started out intending not to go to cavity backs (as I thought then they were pig ugly and still do) and no hybrid and was determined to make it work.

Anyway, have a look whats in the bag below, says it all really.
especially condisering hybrids,if Padraig has them in his bag and uses them with great effect to win the open then
I'm certainly not going to put myself at a disadvantage.

Besides I notice your handicap is 2, they outa make guys like you play with only 3 clubs in the bag and hickory shafts to give the rest of us a chance.

play a Wilson Fybrid after using a friends. Great in light rough or on the fairway but irons better in the damp rough at the moment.

They are nothing new. Look at old skool clubs with hickory shafts, and this sort of head was around in Old Tom Morris's day too. If anything, I would have thought that would be one of the first clubs he would recognise. He would have no chance with a Cally Diablo and a TM spider putter.

I feel I have the best of both worlds now.

I have the hybrids for scruffy lies or soft landing long shots.

I also have my 3 & 4 iron for a lower more penetrating shot.

Having moved from a pure links course where lower ball flight is essential to a hilly Parkland where my 2 iron was useless and my 4 wood was rarely needed due to a shorter course.

The hybrids have filled the gap perfectly and give me the great option of hitting the par 5s in 2 where the greens are 40ft above the fairway in 2 cases easily with the higher ball flight.

really pleased with the purchases.

So we can expect to see that handicap down to scratch this season then? Only kidding but it does make sense that a player of your undoubted quality should use equipment to give him as much help as possible especially if competing with higher handicappers with extra shots and more than one hybrid in their bag.

I think for the type of course you describe espcially when the firmer weather arrives they will give you a great flexibility.

On a separate note chippers are the work of the devil and should be in Room 101

I agree. Any golfer worth his or salt wouldn't even consider stooping to so low to use clubs that are easy to hit. Where's the challenge?
Mine's a Rapture 18 degrees
and dont get me started on chippers lol

I’m genuinely interested and I’ve been so used to my irons as well. So what would I be looking for to replace my 3 iron?

In saying that in my last few games I’ve been hitting my long irons as good as I’ve ever hit them.....but a high 3 iron would be good.

I did a bit of research on this and it revealed that the difference in distance in hybrids is far less than with woods.

For example the difference for me between a 3 wood and a 4 wood is about 30 yards
Whereas
My Hybrid 1 goes 235 yards
and my
Hybrid 2 goes 220 yards

all I can say is Hybrid 2 goes the same as my 2 iron but my hybrid is nearly all carry whereas the 2 iron had a bit of run but I can hit it out of virtually any lie and it comes down a lot softer.
I would say that a hybrid 4 would replace a 3iron but put up a post to ask the question as I am new to the cheating stick technology

Love my Cleveland 4 Hybrid, replaced my 3 Iron a treat.

Next week the 2 Hybrid will replace my 5 wood for the 220yd shots.

Then that is me set for the season.

Absolutely! I use them too, I suppose cavity backs with huge sweet spot compared to old school blades are cheating sticks too :D

I also love these hybrid golf Clubs, I am still using one which is now almost 6 yrs old. I carry it everywhere i go to play. These are awesome.

I had a love hate relationship with hybrids until I got my Ping Hybrid. That said, even that doesn't always behave itself, even though considerable more consistent in flight than previous ones I've had.

But as for cheat sticks. Well to be honest I can do exactly the same with my steel headed fairways woods as I can with any hybridout of rough or by green. Yes distances with hybrids are different to woods. But also different to the suposed iron distances too. Fair compromise between the two in my thinking.

Any modern clubs are cheat sticks in our bags compared with what came before.

As for chippers. Devils work. Handy for some people, but take up a valuble space in the bag that could be used by another club, as we can only carry 14 clubs.

As far as cheat sticks go for me. Nothing can replace a 60 degree wedge & a Yes Putter.
