How well attended is your Men's prize giving night?

My club doesn’t just give out the trophies…but we also celebrate the successes that the club teams and members have had on the wider regional, national, UK, European and indeed the World stages. Alongside the AGM it’s a celebration evening.

That’s nice.
My club holds a gala dinner at the Ritz or the Savoy, with a guest speaker like the Queen or George Clooney.

At current club I have never attended even though I have won club and foursome championship several times,
does that make me a bad member ?

Quite well, now that we have far fewer of them. We have about 3 per year now, where thae significant prizes from the preceeding few months are given out in the one go. Years ago, we had the prizes for the board and other major comps on the night of. But numbers were dwinding embarrassingly. Not even all prize collectors would be there or even a sub.

Be a good discussion, who do you think makes a good member ?

a) Someone who only plays golf
b) Someone who plays golf and also attends the bar
c) Someone who enters competitions only
d) Someone who enters competitions and also attends the bar
e) Someone who only turns up on special occasions ?

I dont think you can judge 'good' like that. We all have different aspects we get from our membership, and to each their own. One might add those who contribute their time voluntarily to committees, offices, or the running if the club. But that isnt for everyone either. The bottom line is, if you pay your sub, it is worth it to you in some way, and differently to different people, so you are a good member.

I think a big part of it depends on the club too, I used to be at a club there was a big drinking/social culture, bar was always rammed every weekend. Any night or anything club put on, especially prizegiving night would be mobbed as it was another excuse for a night out. Club I’m at now is very much golf first, members bar/nights out second, prizegiving night just before Christmas there was pretty quiet, a lot of winners missing too.

Having an event like this just before Christmas makes no sense to me. I wouldn't say I'm the busiest of folks over the festive period but even I would struggle to fit a golf club event in amongst all the friends and family stuff going on.

At the end of the playing season (if you have one of course) would make more sense. To me, anyway.

Someone who pays their annual subscription. What they do after that is entirely up to them!

My club holds a 'Presentation Day' competition just before the handover of Captains (week before the AGM). Shotgun start, everyone in the bar afterwards, buffet, casual wear (some people come more formally dressed). All over within the hour. Probably get 70% of prize winners attending. Serves its purpose, I suppose.

100% mate, bonkers

Presentation night is normally held on a Saturday Evening, always poorly attended, I would say on average less than 50% of the winnings are accepted on the night, we have a small membership c250 but if we get 40 in attendance we have done well.

Free drinks are offered to al that attend the AGM, last year there was less than 20 in attendance.
