Been round to daughters today to give son in law a hand in the garden laying 16 sleepers for a lawn to sit in the middle, X eventually.
Anyway, the flat back Lorry turns up and son in law says " you get one end". " er heyup, your talking to King Coal here, al show you how it's done" after about 20 seconds ave got one on me shoulder and carried it round to the back garden. God almighty I think me spine is compressed. Anyway the little fat guy who delivered them, then walks round the corner with two on his shoulder:mmm:. What's that all about.
So who amongst us if a beefcake.

I laboured on a building site may years ago helping build my own house, one day the plumber who was also doing the lead work on the houses asks me to carry a roll of lead flashing up the ladders to the first floor. I barely got it on to my shoulder and it took me three attempts to get it up, but managed.

These days I'm a little stronger a couple of 25kg bags of cement or plaster on the shoulder is easy and carrying a couple of 24 inch square flag stones is manageable.

My auld man is 80 and fit as a lop, not as strong as he used to be, but he'll still carry 25kg bags of plaster, he gets me to mix them mind you, by hand with a paddle in a tin bath.

But back in the day when he did his plastering apprenticeship they were mixing 100 weight of plaster at a time and while one was going out to the plasters another batch was getting mixed.

Eeh. I remember when a bag of dust (cement) weighed 1cwt and you carried them no problem. Now, with flippin elfin safety and manual handling regs, it's half that.

Wimps ;)

Sometimes a bit of brain power is greater than muscle power. We are currently redecorating what used to be an office in the house and we asked the joiner and his mate if they could remove the safe. When I came home it was lying in the middle of the floor as they couldn't move it any further because it was too heavy. One brush shaft cut into three to make rollers and I had it outside in under half an hour. It's great what the Egyptian Pyramid builders taught us!

In my latter rugby years I trained Monday to Friday, sometimes twice a day, played Saturday and rested on Sunday. The twice a day days were the days I was in the gym as well as out on the field. Upper body strength for hanging onto the ball and mauling was excellent.

I carried £1400 in coins from the bank to my car about half a mile away yesterday - arms felt like they were dropping Off!

One of the lads, when he finished at the Pit, went delivering coal. Had five days delivering coal, played golf on Saturday and could not lift his arms above his shoulders. He was in agony. Handed his notice in on the Monday.

Pity you couldn't stop it all collapsing round your waist

I have the upper body strength of a 9st weakling but very strong legs. All the sports I played as a kid were leg orientated (football, full back/winger at rugby, running and jumping events at athletics) so I have strong legs. Got into cycling a few years ago as well so that helps.
